Also remember that (in gaming manner of speaking) you've probably gained some experience since you picked up the firearms profiency, and raised your BAB, thereby increasing your accuracy.
Think on this... All things equal, a 6th level Warrior/Fighter/Soldier/Whatever will have a better chance to hit with a non-proficient weapon, than a 1st level Warrior/etc. will with a proficient weapon. Why? Because regardless of the weapon, the 6th level fellow has enough experience to anticipate the kick of a pistol (even if he doesn't know how to reload it), or to use a knife to slash at the throat (even if he doesn't know the proper fighting stance)... You catch my meaning, I think.
