Spycraft's Education?

Gadodel

First Post
I've recently picked Spycraft up. Great book! It will fit well within my campaign. I have a question about Education. Can Education be used instead of Knowledge Skills?

It sort of makes sense to. Most college graduates have a little bit of knowledge in a lot of things. Especially if they switched 'majors' from time to time. ;) I think that High School students can say the same thing as Secondary Curriculum's are becoming more advanced.

Would it be fair to say that Ranks in a Knowledge skill would be useful in showing very specific knowledge that the Character has? Example:
Education would cover 'History' in general. Though, a character that has studied, say the 'English Monarchy'; might have Knowledge-Nobility (England).

*Note*

I posted something similar in the House Rules section. After rereading Education in Spycraft...I realized that the ability was not just for Espionage, but general knowledge as well.....So, it wasn't really a "House Rule" topic at all.

Education rolls should allow for a lot of breadth of knowledge, but not much depth.

Ex: An Education roll tells you most common acids won't dissolve glass. A Kn(Chemistry) roll tells you which specific acids will dissolve glass and how fast.

(Then, of course, Craft(Chemicals) lets you whip up said acids in a lab)

You might want to post this question on the Spycrat Boards, where the knowledgable folks will be able to help you further.

Thanks, Guy.

Education specifically covers the stuff that wouldn't be considered a Knowledge (chosen focus) category, such as whether or not you might have heard of a rival spy, know of recent world events or whether or not you can walk on water if you run fast enough. It is a representation of all the miscellaneous knowledge and factoids your agent may have picked up over the course of his career. It's immensely helpful way for people to have what is effectively Knowledge (General), and can simultaneously acts as a plot moving device when things get stuck.

Education provides you with nothing that is particularly difficult or in-depth, however - it's more of a test of your memory for simple facts and information than it is tool to tell the character the atomic weight of Americanium. So I think the trick here is not to make Knowledge focuses more specific, but rather to reduce the complexity of information you may learn via the Education check, because typically, an education check is intended to be used when you couldn't find the requested information in a book :) Hope that helps.

Thanks. Your information is quite helpful.

I did an extensive search on The Spycraft Boards and the topic has come up, a bit. I just thought that I would try my luck here first, before posting over there.
