SRD Woes

Right now relying on WotC is a source of pain. :\ If nothing else I'll see if I can get the new downloads translated (eventually) to Nisus Writer (Mac) and through NW to standard RTF. If you have a Mac Nisus Writer handles standard RTF beautifully. (Warning, Nisus writer can open MS RTF, but you get tons of coding junk with the text.)

Jeranon is correct, I had to modify the stock rtfx program to correctly handle table formatting. However, I only used other versions of the SRD to consult their indices and in the case of Sovelior/Sage, get the list of monster images they were using. To generate XML, I use the RTFs straight from Wizard's site.

I was going to suggest the Openoffice route. I've been able to modify MS formats with Openoffice. It is a little large, but since it is free it might not be a bad option to install on your mac just to be able to read MS files that come your direction.

I use OpenOffice all the time to create, read, edit, and save in other formats using Microsoft documents. May be worth looking into.

Note: I am using the Windows version of OpenOffice, but as far as I know the Mac version is no different.

OpenOffice works splendidly for all kinds of things. Heavy formatting may be a problem, but WotC doesn't heavily format anything electronic that I've seen

Track Changes plain breaks in OpenOffice.

But - for a normal person's purposes, OpenOffice will probably be all that and a bag of Doritos.

So, comment out lines 1431, 1432, 1441 and 1442 of rtfanalyser.cpp in rtfx 0.9.1.

EDIT: Note that this means there is an extra row and an extra column added to each table, but the XSLT I posted handles that.

Download a progam called Mellel. It's a word processor for OS X, and it handles the SRD just fine. Haven't tried exporting, but at least it lets you work with the files.

Good advice for most Mac users, but...

I'm stuck with an old iMac, an opaque grape that can't handle OSX (I tried). With my finances 'bout the only way I can get a new(er) Mac is through donations from the public. Which you can make at my Table of Contents through the Amazon Honor System link if you're so inclined.

I did do a new download of both SRDs hosted by Wizards. Conversion to Nisus Writer went well. What I am going to do is convert to Mac text, then to AppleWorks. That's where I'll be doing the work of extracting the various templates and the kobold information, then applying the templates and doing more comprehensive write-ups of the templated beasts. Expect the first posting in the home brew forum of the Creature Catalog in a few. Will include information particular to the Dragon Earth modern day D&D setting.

Getting back to the Mellel word processor, where would you find it?
