Stacking DR?

Theroc

First Post
Alright, is it possible to stack damage reductions of the same type together?

For example: A level 7 Barbarian/level 6 Dwarven Defender

He gains DR 1/- for his barbarian levels and DR 3/- for hid Dwarven Defender Levels.

Does that become DR 4/- or do you simply take the highest.

I am assuming something such as DR 5/Silver would NOT combine for nonsilver weapons, though...

According to SRD:

"If a creature has damage reduction from more than one source, the two forms of damage reduction do not stack. Instead, the creature gets the benefit of the best damage reduction in a given situation."

It sounds like DRs don't stack, so your Bbn/DwDef would have DR 3/-.

As for specified DRs, though, I'm a little fuzzier, given the SRDs statement. How should you rule a fiendish ogre Bbn 7, with DR 1/- for barbarian levels, and DR 5/magic for having the fiendish template. Does this mean this monster always ignores 1 point of damage regardless of the source of damage, and can ignore an additional 4 points of damage if that damage is non-magical?

Yeah, he takes the "best of".

In that case he has DR 5 / magic first, and if that is penetrated, then you abort to the DR 1 / -

Basically take all of a creature's DRs and sort them from highest DR to lowest and compare a source of damage to the list and see how far down the list it can go.

so yes, basically everything is -1, and in the case of non-magic weapon attacks it's another -4.

iirc that's physical damage only, ... that same example was attacked by someone wielding a burning stick/torch, the bludgeoning damage would get a -5 but the fire damage would be unmitigated.
