About the shield as a primary weapon.. If I get it right, it doesn't matter if it is on my off-hand if it is the only arm I attack with, thus giving me full attacks at no off-hand penalty? If so, its almost certainly better to attack with the shield under DM+DS+smite..

This is only true if you have Ambidexterity. If you don't, all attacks with your off-hand suffer a -4 penalty. See the "Normal" subheading of the Ambidexterity feat description in the PHB.

Unless the shield is in your right hand and the weapon in your left (assuming you are right handed). As the shield is so much more beneficial in this situation, it just might be. Which is what I was referring to. :)

Oh, and as to extra turning/extra smiting... Nix the extra turning. If you are pumping your charisma for this build, that pumps your turning on it's own. Extra smiting has no such work around, but is largely unnecessary unless you find yourself fighting multiple 300 hp dragons per day. There are much better feats to take. :)

I'd recommend only a +1 shield of bashing, if that. The dice size isn't really going to matter. A normal shield will get by just fine and be much cheaper (allowing more charisma bonus items, like armor of command, also in Defenders of the Faith, and cloaks of charisma). Why? Because you are going to divine shield it. It gains charisma mod as an enhancement bonus to hit, damage, and AC. +5 shield? I've got a +9 shield that also adds +9 to hit and +18 to damage when I charge and bash with it!

And as already mentioned, divine might is a free action now (thank you Skip!) so one action for divine shield and then go to it. :)
