Standing on an Opponent

Let's say I trip a guy, and then take a 5 foot step into his space.

Normally. standing up doesn't provoke AOO. But I would think in this situation, you are definaely moving through a threatend area.

What do you guys think?

I'd allow it -- it's cool.

OTOH, be careful if he's got a weapon: you won't be allowed to use your shield against him, and if you're planning on staying in that space, you're denied your dex bonus against him. You're just begging for a crotch-shot if you stand over a guy like that.

He can definitely roll 5' away from you and stand up, provoking no AoO. You're not grappling him, after all.

Keep in mind that this is all house-rules to cover a situation not listed in the rules.

Finally, you still both threaten one another.

Since he's threatening you and you're moving into his space, I'd prolly at least let him have an aoo on you (for moving into your space, not for the 5' step).

Other than that, though, this is a cool move. I could see it as the basis for a feat that lets you strike enemies with an aoo when they stand up, maybe with a bonus to hit.

Just because the opponent is prone, doesn't mean he's not threatening. There are only certain circumstances that allow you to:

A) Move through an opponents square: Tumble is the only one I can think of

B) Occupy an opponents square: Grappling is the only one I can think of here

Unless the opponent is considered helpless, I don't think that you can pass through his square. Of course the DM is always right and if wants to let you, then go for it.

Grapple says you take an AoO for moving into an opponent's space. I'd allow this maneuver, perhaps as a way to get past an opponent blocking a doorway. You just have to accept the AoO, improved grab and similar abilities notwithstanding. I'd also require the opponent to move out of that square before he/she could get up. That eliminates the issue of this other non-standard "standing up in an occupied space" problem.

First, moving into an occupied square even if occupied by a prone oppenent provokes an AoO.

Second, standing up from prone does not provoke AoOs.

Thirdly, if you end your turn in an occupied square you fall prone in that square.

Fourthly, well ... cannot think of anything else ... sorry ...
