Standing up and 5 foot step

We had a bit of rules argument yesterday and I wanted to know your opinion. We had a prone enemy 5 feet away from one of the PCs; I believed she could stand up (a move action, which is doesn't have to be the same as actually moving), move 5 feet and attack, while others thought that standing up enters the "performing any kind of movement" cathegory and therefore she couldn't do a 5 foot step.

The confusing part is distinguishing "Move Action" from a move. Standing up is probably not actual movement, which although not explicitly defined, is generally viewed as moving (up to) your speed.

There was this argument in another thread. One thing to note is where to draw the line of making "any kind of movement" deny the ability of a 5 foot step.
Drawing a weapon? getting material components for spells? casting a spell? picking an item from the ground in the square next to you?

I agree with Infiniti2000. This isn't movement as in moving into anotehr square, so a 5 foot step is possible.

Someone, the players in your group need to read the big brown book that has, ya know, the rules.

nothing invalid about standing up, taking a 5', then making a single attack.

If somebody stands up, are they in the same square they were in before they stood up? Yes. Therefore, it's not movement.

I'd direct your players to the last line of p.138 and the first two lines of p.139 of the PHB.

Seconded, a 5ft. step can be made before, during or after an action.

Standing up is a "Move Action"
5ft. step is a "No Action"
Attacking is a "Standard Action"

I think the confusion comes from the Movement part. You can't move and take a 5ft. step in the same round. However, if the Movement part of your round was a non-movement move action, then you can.

Examples of non-movement move actions..
Standing up from Prone
Direct or redirect an active spell
Draw a weapon
Mount or dismount a Horse
Pick up an item
Ready or lose a shield

you get the idea...
