Star Pact Fluff Material

Does anyone know where i can find more fluff matieral on the Star spawn, Star pact entities like Hadar and Acamar and so forth, looking to run a more Weird Fantasy type setting than baseline DnD.
The Weird Fantasy material has been with D&D since the 70's. It is just more common since the far realm has been gaining more traction with game designers and fans since 2e's Gates of Firestorm Peak.

Basically it started with Robert E howard, author of Conan the barbarian, being pen pals with H.P. Lovecraft.

Given what inspired the Far Realms, I'd start by reading the works of the Mythos writers (Lovecraft, Derleth, and so forth). That would take up a lot of time, though.

So try reading the Wiki and raiding Call of Cthulhu RPG books.

And for giggles, I include a link to a thread I started a while back that discusses the renaming of Starpact powers.

Well i am familiar with the Cthulhu stuff and could probably ramble off a dreamlands or Carcosa mod from the top of my head, but i am planning a kinda of weird, psuedo sci fi series of adventures set around a group of moons orbiting a distant gas giant, where arcane magic is outlawed and immortal disembodied Psions rule. As such, i plan on having Warlocks and star spawn being the major obvious bad guys at least from the societal veiwpoint.

Hmmmm...tell us more!

Given that Mythos-inspired stuff tends to include a common theme of mutation/aberration, there are some other sources that are not Mythos related that you might consider using in your setting.

  1. S.M. Stirling's Universe Next Door series, esp. the second book, [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Courts-Crimson-Kings-S-M-Stirling/dp/0765314894"]In the Courts of the Crimson Kings[/ame]. In this Sword & Planet genre series, the Martians have advanced biotechnology, so they have things like organic firearms and so forth.
  2. Clive Barker's [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Imajica-Featuring-New-Illustrations-Appendix/dp/0060937262/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282013332&sr=1-1"]Imajica[/ame] features a cosmology in which our world was once part of an array of other realms but was sundered from them by the fall of man- shades of C.S. Lewis' Perelandra books- and where magic is real...but largely forgotten on Earth. Many of the beings encountered would not be out of place in Barker's more famous Hellraiser stories, and would work well in a Mythos inspired setting.
  3. The Lexx TV show has elements- a biomechanical space-dreadnaught under the command of the irresponsible; a cosmology including some very strange and probably artificially created worlds- that could provide some interesting twists for you.

I would look to the mythos of voodoo.

Within Haitian voodoo, for example, there are numerous lesser spirits called Loas. These spirits have a powerful and tangible influence over chosen mortal entities. Loa play an important if minor part in some of the cyber punk novels by William Gibson, culminating in Mona Lisa Overdrive. These are great books in any case but interesting if you have the time to research.

Another option would be adapting a pseudo pantheon of spirits based upon perverted Egyptian gods. Plenty of material here, but not so well known as to destroy the suspension of disbelief for players.

Hope that's helpful in some way.

"Performing the Pact" in Dragon 381, pg. 50-51, and "Sealing the Pact" in Dungeon 174, pg. 95-96, have information on the Star Pact and Ulban the Messenger as a sample patron.

I guess you already have MM3, yes?
