[Star Wars] Anyone ever run a Dark Side campaign?

Dave G

First Post
Due to a massive restructuring in my SWd20 game I am starting over. This time we will be a group of 3 and there has been some interest in playing a Dark Side campaign.

To make matters worse, the players want to start out as Jedi... before the descent into the dark side.

Any advice/ideas on how to prepare a campaign of this nature? I think it will be fun, but I also think it might be one of the more challenging games I have ever run. I guess I will just prepare the game normally and try to put a lot of moral/ethical dilemmas into the game-play. Luring them away from the Jedi code through tempations of greater powers and such...

Anyway, I'd appreciate any thoughts, experiences or ideas you might have.

The game is set circa episode I with 2 jedi guardians and an NPC

Dark Side

I am running a web-based Dark Side campaign right now. Everyone is force-sensitive, and no one started with any dark side points.

The difference is that I didn't want them to start out as Jedi, *and* I wanted them to start in the Empire. There was no luring involved, at least with the first 5 characters. I started the characters at second level, requiring a background. I had 2 pilots, 1 Imperial Scout, 1 Imperial bounty hunter wannabe, and 1 intelligence officer.

Only one of them was allowed force user levels, because she had an excellent background. Anyway, they were summoned together by an Imperial Admiral, a fallen Jedi, and have been formed into an elite unit. If they prove themselves to him, then they get some training.

The Admiral stipulated that they would be required to file secret reports on one another. Its been really awesome to see them stabbing each other in the back. They don't trust each other at all. Its cut-throat. Or it was, anyway. Now, they're realizing that they will need to work together, since they are each somewhat specialized, and the mission that they are on requires some trust.

The newer characters, who haven't met the Admiral yet, are also mistrusted. This presents a problem, since there are already plans to "space them" as soon as they get off planet.

Of course, they haven't been presented with any difficult moral questions yet. They're still good Imperial citizens. In a few days, I'm going to present them with a situation where the dark side will be the easiest solution to their problem.

Half of the players are already asking about which Dark Side prestige classes I might allow, so I know what their choices will be. To my delight, 2 of them have no desire to turn to pure evil. It will be interesting to see how the others respond to them.

And the Admiral never assigned a leader. I expect a power struggle to ensue at some point when they realize that one of them will advance in rank. That ought to provide good RP opportunities.

I ruled that characters could use all kinds of skills on one another. There is a lot of lying and intimidating. I had to work out a way to make that work between PCs, and required good roleplaying of any rolls. If you don't RP it well, then the roll doesn't count.

But that's just my campaign.

If your characters are already Jedi, they know the code, which mine don't and won't know, unless one of them gets cruious enough to do research in character.

I think a key to my game so far has been the aspect of competition. While the players work together to a purpose, each one is really out for himself. Dark Jedi are only interested in personal gain.

Purely out of game, the Dark Side Prestige classes are very powerful. They are a significant player temptation. The dark side does offer more power in the way of feats and special abilities.

If you have the Dark Side Sourcebook, then you've probably read up on the way some of the other darksiders went over. Several of them were unable to find Masters willing to take them as apprentices. I don't quite understand this, but apparently, if a Jedi trainee isn't accepted as a Paduwan, then they are sent to the Agricorps. This could be a beginning. Maybe your players couldn't find a master and have decided to avoid this less than desirable fate.

Once they're out on their own, it would just be a matter of running into a Dark Jedi to tempt them and show them the power of the Dark Side. Sith holocrons are also possiblities, though these are pretty rare.

It all depends on what kind of campaing you're looking for, I suppose. More details of what you've got could help us help you.

Sorry, didn't mean to ramble.
