Star Wars D20 - need to make a character

Tonight we're finishing up "season 2" of our D&D game and starting a Star Wars D20 game.

I just can't think of what character concept I want to play. Any suggestions?

I played a Hutt Jedi Consular in another Star Wars game, so I don't want to play that combination again.

But other than that, I just can't pick a species and class. I think I do not want to play a Scoundrel (my D&D character is a rogue) and I don't want to play a noble.

I think the game is set in the "end of the Republic era" but I'm not 100% sure. I rolled very good stats (11, 13, 14, 14, 16, 17).

In D&D, I have played every core class in 3.x except for Sorcerer. And I've played every core race at least once. I've played standard types (halfling rogue) and less conventional types (half-orc paladin). I'm open to pretty much any ideas. So, any suggestions for Star Wars D20?

TIA.

Do you have a favored play-style?

If you're wanting to avoid Force-users but still be a viable combatant, either go Soldier (place one of those 14s in Intelligence to get some much needed extra skill points), or you can go Scout, who can fight but they just need to be a bit more clever about it due to a low Class Defense bonus. A Soldier with a blaster rifle and a good selection of ranged-combat feats (Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, and Multishot) can be devastating in battle, since you can hose down large quantities of bad guys and not inadvertantly shoot your buddies.

Fringer's a fun option, as with the Bonus Class Skill ability you can develop the character as you go, and can make a pretty potent combatant, and have a good breadth of physically-orientated skills. I've used Fringer a few times, once as a springboard to Jedi Guardian in a Rebellion Era game, another to springboard into Soldier in a merc-based RotE campaign. Third Fringer character stayed a Fringer in a starfighter-based NJO campaign.

By and large, unless you're playing a Jedi or a Wookiee (or a Wookiee Jedi), I've found it's not a good idea to over-focus on melee combat.

Tech Specialist is good if you prefer a "support-role" character (be sure to grab the latest errata from the WotC SW home page; Tech Spcs get a needed boost).

Be a noble! They look weak mechanically but everyone will love you when you say "we need a PDQ-71 phase modulator to repair the hypershunt drive coupling? I'll have Mother send me my allowance and we can get two!"

Another fun option is being a droid. I played a scoundrel droid (officially he was a "repair and tech droid" but his previous owner was a smuggler and had him programmed for crime). He wasn't built for combat but did have some useful things (knockout gas, electric zapper like R2's, a laser welding torch). He mostly hoped to avoid shootouts and as long as he didn't whip out his concealed blaster the enemies would ignore him. He was a super hacker as well as a first class pilot.

I pretty much just "built" the droid as I would a regular character (we were doing point-buy stats); with purchasing droid features instead of equipment.

And we had a funny bit when I accidently said my character was a druid instead of saying droid, which brought up a lot of jokes like "these aren't the druids you're looking for..."

Sadly, I already asked about being a droid, and was told no. So that's not an option. I thought it would be fun just to talk in beeps and whistles, especially when my character had some vital information to impart to others. :D

An ewok soldier useing heavy repeaters and grenades, wears a red head band and an 'antique' bullet chain, just for style. Called Rambo. :D

I've always enjoyed Duros...

But if you're looking for something out of the ordinary, and it works with the time period, go for a Miraluka. Pretty much human, but they have no eyes and see through the Force. :)

Thanks for all the input.

We're starting up the Star Wars campaign on Thursday, and I have finally decided to play a Rodian Fringer.

The game is set a few years after "Return of the Jedi"--we've got a human solider and a Twilek Soundrel/Noble. A fourth player may join after a few sessions; he wants to play a wookie.

RodianX (I don't have a name for him yet) was a slave of Togorian pirates, who forced him to keep their ship in working condition. During one of the New Republic's periodic campaigns to eradicate pirates, RodianX was freed. He took some satisfaction in helping the republican soldiers defeat the Togorian pirates, even if he did not particularly enjoy the killing.

RodianX may use his keen tracking to hunt down the Togorian who originally kidnapped & enslaved him. He's not really sure what to do without being ordered around; years of slavery will do that to a man....er, Rodian.

Now, I've got to decide if he's going to look up his uncle Greedo--and track down Greedo's killer when he finds out his uncle has been callously murdered! :p

LOL. Just don't name him Cheedo, Freedo, Dorido, or Tostido. ;)

Soldier, Noble/Scoundrel, and (presumably) a Scout or another Soldier (the wookie).

I'd say Force Adept (Or a Scoundrel with Force Sensative and a couple of other Force feats). Don't call it "the force" or anything. Just play it off as extreme luck. Subconscious Force manipulation, as it were.

"Boy, it sure was lucky that guy just totally believed everything I just told him and then did exactly what I said without question. Wierd, eh?" (Dominate Mind)

"Wow, good thing you hit that wierd updraft right before you splattered into the pavement." (Move Object)

"Holy crap! I coulda sworn that my blaster was empty. I wonder how that wierd electrical malfunction happened? Took care of that bounty hunter well enough, though." (Force Lightning)

"Good thing those wounds weren't nearly as severe as we first thought. My first aid training really came in handy." (Heal Other)

I guess that really comes across as how a lot of people play Mage: The Awakening, but *shrug* it'd be something different in Star Wars.
