Star Wars d20

First Post
I've been thinking about switching my party over to Star Wars from DnD. I have a few questions:

1) How well done are the books in comparison to the DnD core books?

2) How many books are needed?

3) How rough would the conversion be?

Thanks all

All you really need is the Revised Core Book. Are you converting characters from D&D to Star Wars? There are a few differences like the Vitality Wound points system. Vitality is basically HP, and wounds points are negative HP. Wound points equal Con, and you're not necissarily unconscience when you get there. Criticals do normal dmage but applied to wounds. Also, all the lcasses get a defense bonus. This is a class bonus to AC (which is called Defense).

I don't think it would be that big of deal. Any magic would be difficult since Star Wars doesn't have magic. It really depends on what the characters are and what you are converting.

We're not necassarily converting characters...

What I meant was how difficult would switching systems be.

So are the monsters and treasure/exp charts and all the necessary DM stuff in the revised core rulebook?

I don't have the book, but I think there are creatures in there. THe XP system is a little different, they base it on the adventure. If it was easy you give 500xp per level, hard they get 1000xp per level. Those might not be the exact numbers but it's something like that.

The system is pretty much the same. Switching genres I think will be tougher as the system is pretty much the same.

Okay, all you need is the Revised book. If you want to run with jedi's heavy, get the Dark Side sourcebook and the new Jedi book I can't remember the name of, and definately get the new book on equipment, its one of their best. The rest you don't need. Those four books will do, and if I remember all are color throughout, if somewhat a bit spendy, but definately worth it if you like star wars and want to run it.

As for learning a new system, that won't happen since its d20. You know how to play one, you can play all. Plus is has the Force. N'uff said. :D

As for reference sheets, I really don't know if there is or not.

that is not quite true.

there are minor differences that can hold you up.

As far as I can tell.. shooting a pistol within a threatened range does not cause an AoO.

Also... the wound system is different. As is the armour system....

but the "core" structure is the same. you just need to read the rules carefully so as to not get tripped up by the differences.

O.. I play both.

and the Craft rules are different.

And a lot of what is written in the SW source books seems to be written in a less clear a writing style. at least to me.

1) IMO, the revised SWD20 book is head and shoulders above the 3E core books. Many key concepts of the D20 system are explained much more clearly.Things are easier to find. Pages are easier on the eyes. One thing for example, that I really like about the Revised SWD20 book is in each skill description, there is a fairly detailed section on how and when taking 10 or 20 would or would not apply. AoO are explained in a way that actually makes sense.

2) You only really need the Revised Corebook or the original Corebook. I personally like the original book's space combat and vehicle combat system better than the revised book's version (the former is more abstract and less like a war/boardgame than the latter), but I seem to be in the minority, at least among internet fans.

3) I'm not sure what you would be converting really...monsters? PC's? Or do you mean just "learning" the SW system? If that's the case, than I think it should not be terribly difficult at all except for maybe starship combat.

Thanks everyone for your resoponses!

I plan on getting the SWd20 book today and diving right in. A few hours later my party and I are going to start a game :D
