Star Wars manga and comics compared

...this reminds me that I still need to pick up the last A New Hope manga. They're all great adaptations, and this is coming from someone who really doesn't care about manga at all. The style just works amazingly well for Star Wars.

Wow, I didn't know that a manga version of Star Wars even existed, let alone looked that good. I'm impressed.

That Marvel comic looks absolutely terrible, especially in side by side comparison to the manga version. Ugh...

Also, as a note, it is not quite accurate to say that the Star Wars manga is "less PG" than the American version. It is just that, in Japan, that level of violence and gore is considered to be fine for ten-year-olds. Both the American comic and the manga were probably aimed at the same age group.

I have the third volume of the New Hope manga, and while Hisao Tamaki's art tends to be on the cartoony side, his action scenes kick mucho ass (his rendition of Vader and Obi-Wan's duel is a delight, as are his space battles :) ). Never bothered with the Empire and Return manga, as the art of those two didn't appeal to me much (as with all things, not all manga art is made equal :\ ).

C'mon, give em a break. It was the freaking 70's, I think we can forgive the early Marvel Star Wars comics for outdated art and storytelling.

Although I am interested in checking out the first issue of the Marvel series, as it was done by Howard Chaykin (American Flagg!). George Lucas in fact requested that Chaykin illustrate the series, as he was a big fan of his.

I might have some strange nostalgy for those old marvel comics but looking through those comparison pics I really liked them more. The only one in which the manga version was better in my opinion was the scene where Leia strangles Jabba. *Those Hutt eyes* :]

I managed to score the SW mangas a long time ago from a local Waldenbooks before they went under, and really enjoyed the stylism of the art, particularly the Adam Warren covers.

It is bloodier than most Star Wars comics we see, but the article analysis had it right in that the manga versions excel at focusing on the "big important moments" due to the nature of the art style.
