Star Wars: Starfighter

(and probably doesn't pay crazy money the way villain roles for middle-aged and older male actors sometimes have).

I am not an industry insider by any means, but I would expect joining an established franchise like SW or MCU is a little bit about betting on long term income instead of a big up front payout. Even if you're not the star, there are opportunities for sequel options, voice overs, video games, residuals, conventions, etc.

I'm not saying it's a one way ticket to riches, of course. But outside of the huge stars, a lot of Hollywood is very feast-or-famine for income. A Star Wars role could be a ticket to breaking that cycle.

The issue, I think, is that unless that pays off, you may have done more damage to your career overall than just not appearing in the movie.

And so far Star Wars looks like a far worse bet than the MCU. I think it'd be a lot easier to say yes to the MCU! Unless you and your agent/manager are of the opinion superhero stuff is "on the way out" - but I suspect if Thunderbolts* and Avengers: Doomsday work out (and especially if the F4 movie somehow works out!) then the MCU may, and I say this with a great deal of caution, maaaaay be kind of back on track. At least for a few years.

Of course Starfighter could be the first movie of Star Wars getting back on track but that's a lot more uncertain, I'd say.

Also, after you do your MCU movie, you will be in the best shape of your life, for at least a short period of time, which can open up other doors, personally and professionally. Wearing 10 pounds of Twilek tentacles on your head doesn't seem like it has the same sorts of benefits, although your action figures are probably nicer.

Disney has announced a new Star Wars movie called Starfighter.

Starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), it’s set to release in May 2027.

It will take place about five years after Ep IX and will be a standalone story.

A standalone story is an interesting choice too, as it allows for more freedom without being tied down to the main saga. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how they develop this new chapter! With all the hype surrounding Star Wars, I’m sure it’ll be another blockbuster hit. This new film might even become a favorite for many, similar to how people go crazy over big jackpots in casino games. That sounds incredibly exciting! Ryan Gosling in a Star Wars movie? I can already imagine how intense and captivating his role could be. Plus, with Shawn Levy directing, especially with his experience in action and superhero films like Deadpool and Wolverine, this could really be something special. It’s also cool that it's set five years after Episode IX — that gives them a lot of room to explore fresh storylines, characters, and new directions for the Star Wars universe.
