Maev's story is fairly familiar. Orphaned boy grows up in the under city of Corusant, then struggles his way out. Except for Maev, he was born orphaned, and his way out took him to the Jedi Order. Maev was born to a Czerka scientist on Corusant. The scientist was attempting to isolate certain traits in the Twi'lek and Cerean races, and instill them into a "Non-alien" body. When Maev was born, his light green skin and dark blue eyes told the scientist immediately his results were a failure. Due to convoluted Czerka legal restrictions, the subject couldn't be destroyed immediately, but he could be "integrated" at the age of 7. Maev was raised by a company nanny, and then left on the streets the day he turned 7.
However, despite his classification as a "failure" Maev was special. Perhaps because of his mixed heritage, he was a fast learner, a bright child, and almost preternaturally likable (the fact that he was most likely already beginning to express his latent Force abilities must have contributed to this as well). Maev quickly ingratiated himself with one after another of the more successful undercity families. He was a quick learner, and in the undercity, a slight green tint might just be due to bad air - if not, there were more pressing things to worry about than skin color when the gangs came by. Maev made a fair living keeping his down, and his eyes open. He was friendly enough that few suspected the "little green guy" was actually spying for rival gangs, collecting information for local merchants, or just trying to get some dirt he could sell later. Maev might have had a bright future as a gang leader as he grew up, were it not for that one fateful event (And don't all Jedi have that turning point?)
For Maev, it came when he was 11. He was picking through a droid merchant's discard pile, looking for salvageable metals, when he heard a heated argument. Naturally curious, he set out to investigate, hoisting the remains of a droid arc-welder in his hands. What he found was like nothing he'd seen before. A man stood, surrounded by over a dozen Transdosh and Gamorreans, heavily armed. Though the words weren't ones he understood, the poses were - these thugs were here for the man. Common enough for an enforcer squad in the undercity, but what caught Maev was the man's supreme confidence. Even faced with half a dozen bared blades, and more blasters than an entire gang could rustle up, the man was calm. He spoke very few words to the leader, but his intent was clear - it would be best if the gang left. Maev felt bad for the stranger - such confidence wasted would be a shame. Less than a minute later, when the man calmly resheathed his luminescent blade, Maev was in awe. The thugs had fallen to his blade, and to some kind of magic, as the man gestured, flinging opponents weapons aside, or putting them to sleep with a word. He must have gasped in alarm, for the man turned and spotted him. Maev was too enthralled to run, and step out to speak with the man, who he later learned was Jedi Master Ta’karn. Ta'karn must have sense the Force flowing within Maev, for that day was the last that he spent in the undercity.
Being delivered to the Jedi Temple, and meeting the masters there, opened Maev to whole realms he had never imagined. Being an orphan, and a genetic experiment (his keepers never made a secret of his origins), the idea of a Living Force connecting him to people across the galaxy appealed to all the secret dreams he had nurtured growing up orphaned in the undercity - he really wasn't an outcast, or a freak - he was part of everyone else. Through the Force, he belonged. And his Force abilities allowed him to strengthen that bond - to gain trust, to understand feelings, to speak to those far away. That some people turned from the Force was to be expected, and thus he trained with the lightsaber (though he was far more adept at avoiding blows than giving them), and learned the tricks to cloud men's minds and senses. He has always revered Ta'karn, and often traveled with him on missions that required somewhat non-traditional methods. He knows, deep in his heart, that Ta'karn must be making the right decision, whatever the circumstances. Though Maev is fully committed to the Force, as any Jedi, he struggles with the Jedi Code from time to time. This mission allows him both to examine his beliefs, and to insure that the Knights that track down Ta'karn are at least somewhat open minded....
