asgard, jaffa, taari, goa'uld ... etc there's plenty of spacefaring races with big guns that knock them off of their perch ... of course some alliances between certain groups might be bad.
Then again, the Wraith did defeat the Ancients (or at least forced them to retreat). That's no simple feat. On the other hand, they don't seem to have had much opposition in the last few millenia, mostly because they've been pretty good at keeping everyone down. But they'd certainly be bad news if they ever made it to the Milky Way.

The Wraith defeated what was left of the ancients, most ascended and some were fighting a plague. and while tough, I have not seen anything that put them equal with the ancient's tech. The question can a goa'uld take one as host? Still need more info about the wraith as I really want to see what a staff weapon does to one. :D

I do wish the wraith were more than boogeymen, but hopefully season 2 will fix that.

I think they're making a good effort, but it's just falling short with jaded audiences.

The wraith coming through and scooping up everyone is "terrifying" and they treat it as such, but it's also treated as "...and now they're just gone" and leaving it to us to imagine that NO, they aren't just gone, but now they're FOOD. I think they need to make more effort to show the terrifying feeding of the wraith, the horror of this multitude of people walking into the jaws of the beast.

If they took us through the wraith ships after they scooped up all these people, showing many people quailing in terror as numerous wraith fed on others all at once, then we might have more of a feeling of mass horror and desperation than just "...and now they're gone."

I admit I'm a little fuzzy on the timeline, but I thought the it went something like this:
1. Ancients are way cool and build the gate network.
2. Ancients expand their gate network to the Pegasus galaxy, using slightly different tech (Gate v2.0?).
3. Ancients run into Wraith, war ensues.
4. Wraith defeat Ancients due to superior numbers.
5. Ancients submerge Atlantis and return to Earth.
6. Ancients get infected by megaplague.
7. Ancients ascend.

Like I said, it's implied that the wraith defeated the ancients due to superior numbers. Atlantis could easily handle one Wraith attack (that is, with their defenses being fully powered), but then there comes another, and another, and another...

This can't be quite right because the Ancients were part of the Alliance against the Go'auld as soon as 10,000 years ago. And since the ancient weapon recently found in SG-1 was used by the ancients to recreate life in this galaxy, and they would have had to do that alot longer ago than just 10,000 years. So I am guessing this happened.

1. Ancients build gate network possibly millions of years ago.
2. Plague effects Milky Way. Some Ancients use Atlantis and go to Peagus, others ascend.
3. Ascended Ancients use *weapon* to recreate life in Milky Way.
4. Peagus Ancients run into Wraith.
5. Wraith kick Ancient ass.
6. Peagus Ancients sink Atlantis come back to Milky Way.
7. Ancients fight Go'auld.
8. Ancients ascend.

In Memory of Dr. Grodin :( . of Stargate Atlantis. Might have been a nobody NPC, but at least, he took out a Wraith battleship, before he went.

Having Time Machines really screw up everything. :D

I think somewhere down the line we may find out that the wraith are the result of the Ancients, either as a cure to the megaplague or a race they tried to mold into their image as they were ascending.

I think the timeline is going to look more like this:
1...Ancients expand outward from Earth
2...Ancients build Gate Network
3...Ancients expand to other galaxies
4...Megaplague
5...Ascension starts, Milky Way is re-booted, Wraith are created - all as fixes
6...Ascension continues, Wraith turn on Ancients (why ascended do not interfere)
7...Atlantis becomes last stronghold of the unascended (important term)
8...Atlantis is sunk, Unascended leave Peagus
9...Unascended fight Go'auld, Ascension continues
10..Stargate SG-1

This is A LOT of speculation. :D
