Stargate SG-1 + D20 Modern.

So... here's what I'm considering...

I love Stargate. The shows... the movie... I just plain dig the setting and story. For gaming, I'm a D20 Modern convert.
My quandary: Stargate SG-1 RPG is based on Spycraft, which is based on standard D20 SRD.

My thought: Take the Stargate SG-1 book (haven't bought it, yet), and dropping the classes, using the D20 Modern classes and mechanics, basically using Stargate SG-1 as a D20 resource book for the Races/Equipment/Stargate mechanics.

My question: Will it work this way? I don't want to use the half actions, or other Spycraft mechanics, just the Stargate SG-1 races/equipment and such.

Anyone done this, yet?

Aside from getting ritually sacrificed by the people who love the Spycraft version of SG-1, I think you're mostly fine. You'd have to tinker with the vehicle combat system, though, since d20M doesn't have much to deal with flight, and Teal'c is more likely to be bopping around in a death glider than jeepin' it in any given episode. :)

And I don't know what Stargate did with zats. The zat is kind of a massively plot-dependent weapon. Sometimes a hit by it knocks people out. Sometimes they just fall down and are hurt. And the "second hit kills" part would be tough to implement, since a lot of those early hit points should be taken as "ducked down and only got grazed, not a real hit"...

But maybe the system covers this in a way that still works for d20 Modern. Got me.

Yeah... Zat guns are one of the things I'm most curious to see what they did with them. And, yeah... I'll take a good hard look at the vehicle system there. I hear it's quite superior to the D20 Modern one.

I don't know if d20 Modern follow the D&D system, but....

Couldn't a zat does massive amounts of subdual damage? That transfers the lethal damage once the 'subdual' damage has been maxed out...

Yeah, it should work. But bear in mind, much of SG-1 is rules. Maybe 1/3 is source material. If you throw out the SG-1 rules, it's probably not worth the cover price.

Zats do subdual damage. But if you get shot again, it's like a coup de grace attack.

SG-1 , the main rulebook, doesn't have any rules on vehicles.

First Shot you get a Fort Save, or you are knocked out
Second shot (within 20 Minutes of first) Coup de Grace
Third shot (within one minute of 2nd) body is immediately destroyed

I bought the book when it first came out, I am also not a BIG Spycraft fan, But the book is still incredible even if you are just a fan of the show

Even if 1/3 of the book is source material, it should still be good. I mean... I need the race stats, equipment, and what mechanics they use for the Stargate, itself. Plus, seeing how they stat up the main characters, etc...
I'm particularly interested in the mechanic for a Goa'Uld parasite to take over a host.

Invictikore:
Would you say it's worth the price simply as resource and minimal mechanics?

Right ON! :) Free shipping, even. Heh.

It is worth buying, but if you use d20 Modern, you'll largely find the equipment section either redundant or incompatible.

I also think the stats for the characters are a bit off (a 14 Charisma for the late doctor? Hrrrrmph. Should be twice that. But also, MacGuyver only has a 10 Int, but he's clearly pretty smart on the show. And Teal'c only has a Charisma of 9, but he's pretty charming and good with the ladies on the show. ).

Probably the most useful thing are the charts for planets, and random missions.

The goa'uld bit is pretty simple - the victim keeps making a Will Save until he fails.

I've only been looking at my friend's copy here and there, but I'd say it's worth it. The sheer amount of setting info makes it worth it if you're going to be GMing.

I bet you could port over the gear and resource picks section, which is a good way to model requisitioning equipment in a bueracratic setup like the military.
