Starship Troopers?

Having read through the free stuff at mongoose, it looks to be d20 Modern/Future.

I'm with you though. Mongoose stuff tends to be pretty hit or miss, and I'm not ready to pick it up until I see some reviews or get a review copy myself :)

I'd like to think that they'd treat it right, since I'd imagine the license wasn't cheep.

I will consider it if it's built around D20 Modern/Future. Even then, I'll wait for some reviews first before getting it. If it doesn't use Modern, then I'll likely pass on it altogether.

The book kicks off with Basic Training, introducing players to all the common rules of the system - this is a streamlined adaption of the core D20 SRD/OGL rules, honed to provide the Starship Troopers experience!

This was in their press release.
So it looks like base D20 modified.

Well,

I think it can best be described as D20 Modern-like. Playing it would feel a lot like D20 Modern but there are some specific rules that are different. First hit points are a lot less. Generally you only get a point or two per level rather than a die roll. I also don't think you get your CON bonus each level either. Autofire works as a AOE attack against 10' radius. Characters start with the Mobile Infantryman class and can then go into advanced classes later like Sniper, Comms, Field Medic.

There's some weirdness with the classes. The MI class is 10 levels and there is a 10 level Veteren class that you can enter only if you take all 10 MI levels and none of the other advanced classes. However most of the advanced classes are 3-5 levels and this includes the Officer Training Corp. So if you specialize you end up forced to take a bunch of different specialties if the campaign goes up to 20th level.

Admittedly this isn't likely to happen in a SST game but I did notice it.

In regards to Mongoose's poor history with editting I've only found a couple mistakes. Amatuer spelling mistakes admittedly but still for Mongoose that's pretty good.

Well,

You could move gear back and forth without difficulty. Classes and feats might be a little trickier.

So... gear and critters (one would assume) would be pretty easy to port to D20 Modern / Future?

I may have to give it a more serious thought...
I just don't know... I'm always a bit leery getting a RPG version of a franchise I like a LOT.
While I did enjoy Armageddon 2089, I keep hearing good and bad.... hit and miss.
I'll probably end up getting it, eventually... depending on what I hear, I suppose.

Well, considering how it has already veered from the vision in Robert Heinlien's book, I suspect some purists are already concerned about the state of the franchise.

But for me it's enough to note that the Starship Troopers game comes with miniatures perfect for the Klicks in my Star*Drive game.
