starting hp

So I am waiting for my books to arrive because I live in Japan and I am trying to figure out how starting hp are derived.Do they double the hp for 1st level? They seem really high from what I have seen in the pre-release stuff.

Starting hit points are based on your constitution score (not modifier), and you add in some numbers varying by class. If you want to go by level, here's the official excerpt from the Wotc-page.

Class Hit Points

Cleric (level × 5) + 7 + Constitution score
Fighter (level × 6) + 9 + Constitution score
Paladin (level × 6) + 9 + Constitution score
Ranger (level × 5) + 7 + Constitution score
Rogue (level × 5) + 7 + Constitution score
Warlock (level × 5) + 7 + Constitution score
Warlord (level × 5) + 7 + Constitution score
Wizard (level × 4) + 6 + Constitution score

1st level hp = 2.5 times [what your class normally gets per level], rounded down + Constitution score

After 1st level you get 4-6 hp per level, depending on class. (No bonus for Con, unlike previous editions.)

All are high compared to what they used to be. Thank you for no more lvl 1 Wizards stubbing their toe and falling unconcious.

Ok...so what page is the rule for starting hp on? I have never seen anything on the hp being x2.5 anywhere.
They're in the description of each class. For example:

Warlord
(stuff about role, proficiencies, defenses, etc.)
Hit points at 1st level: 12+Constitution score
Hit points per level gained: 5
Healing surges per day: 7 + Constitution modifier

Wizard (level × 4) + 6 + Constitution score
That's wrong. It's:

Class Hit Points

Cleric (level × 5) + 12 + Constitution score
Fighter (level × 6) + 15 + Constitution score
Paladin (level × 6) + 15 + Constitution score
Ranger (level × 5) + 12 + Constitution score
Rogue (level × 5) + 12 + Constitution score
Warlock (level × 5) + 12 + Constitution score
Warlord (level × 5) + 12 + Constitution score
Wizard (level × 4) + 10 + Constitution score

The numbers you were using are the number of healing surges per day.

Starting hit points for each class are given in the individual class descriptions. It doesn't explicitly say anywhere that they are 2.5 times the per level hit points, but a quick look at the chart above will confirm that that is in fact the case.

Starting HP are listed in each class entry.

The numbers given above are a mathematical analysis of those starting numbers given.

Clerics get 12 +
Fighters get 15 +
Paladins get 15 +
Rogues get 12 +
Rangers get 12 +
Warlocks get 12 +
Warlords get 12 +
Wizards get 10 +

The + is Constitution Score for all classes.
At each following level you get a set number based upon class.
The math on those breaks down as shown by others.

No, Ulorian. Unlike your math, his accounts for first level in his formulas.
Yours counts first level twice.
For example, by your chart, the Cleric has 17 + Constitution score hp at first level.
