Starting in comics

BeanFruit pick up the Preacher TPB's, you can't go wrong with them unless you want something grandmother approved.

Didn't he start some storyline where it was hinted Spidey's powers originated from somewhere other then the spider?

Yep, the explaination (hinting really) was that the spider just awakened his inate powers. Of course that this slight revision is hardly a good reason to not read anything by JMS' and you'll miss some really good stuff if you do that.

I don't think I will miss anything- I don't think JMS is a good author.

But, if you think Preacher is a quality book, then are tastes are too different for it to matter to either of us the opinion of the other regarding comic books.

I only read one book regularly: Black Panther - it is not dark, though.

I may start to read Fantastic Four regularly, if Waid can carry through on every new author's promise to make the team explorers once again.

Hey cool! I was just thinking that I might start buying the ol' FF again after I picked up issue 60 (or 498 depending on which number you believe on the front cover) for $.09 an a lark. I was very impressed with the art (esp Sue and Ben) and was quite happy with the story. If the writer followers through with making them explorers again I will definately start buying.

I tried getting into JMS Spiderman but was also put off by the silly plot twist you mentioned.

What's Black Panther like (and is it still produced by Marvel?). I haven't read a Black Panther story in about 18 years (and the one I remember best introduced me to bigotry and racism - I really had no clue about them before - I was 13).

Yeah, that is my stance. I have some faith in Waid, so I as long as he is on the book for the long term (a gamble at best), then it should be a good run.

Of course, for 9 cents, the first book was worth picking up. What a great idea. So great I had to drive 30 miles to get a copy. *slight grumble*

It is still marvel, and Christopher Priest writes the book.

It definitly is a type of book that people seem to love or hate.

Priest has a quirky sense of humor- for example: the narrator (a us governement liaison assigned to Wakanda) was tricked by Mephesto to sell his soul for a pair of pants (he caught him sitting on a toilet).

Black Panther is back to the glory of his first apperance in FF- he is no longer the knocked out king, that is an excuse for other heroes to rescue.

Priest has compared him to the African version of Cap (where Cap always finds a way, BP always has a plan to win) and the Marvel version of Batman. BP is almost always three steps ahead of the villians, cast, and the reader- so it can be a fun read. One quick example of sorts: When going through his desk, you see a book in BP's desk titled something like "Wakanda reaction plan to Galactus attack on Earth".

Here are two of my favorite scenes in the book:

1) Wakanda and the USA are nearly at war. BP meets with Dr.Doom, Magneto, and other superhero rulers- and they discuss how and why it can be stopped. Because they fear if the world sees what the tech level of Wakanda really is at- it will create a global war.

2) BP is in a senate hearing for some reason- and is being ripped into about being a poor superhero. The liaison gives this awesome speech how BP is not a hero at all. He is a ruler of his people. He does what he needs to do for his people.

Priest also does a good job of making dorky villians impressive.

Hydroman internally drowned a man and controlled him to crash a plane (this is pre-911, not some tasteless story done afterward).

Current storyline- heh, ok, this shows how weird things get in this book-

A future BP with a fatal disease (brain problem) comes back to help the cast fight Loki in the wild west. When they get back, future BP is in a coma and is killed by a villian of BP right before BP's eyes.

BP is all about control and planning- knowing how he will die has shaken him up pretty bad.

There are a lot of cast members too- BP has three ceremonial wives that he must protect. One is a wise-mouthed NYC kid, who is in love with Vibraxis (a mutant hero from Wakanda) - which could get him killed.

If you want to pick up a book to try it out- either go with #1 or wait for #50 in october.

The next issue, #49, is tying up the death storyline for the moment- with BP storming the hell.. or something along those lines. All I got is the cover to get details from.

I know #50 has been said to be a good starting point.

In all fairness to JMS and Amazing Spider-man, this explanation was never confirmed as true in the book (it was just Ezekiel's suggesting to Spidey that there might be other possibilities) and it hasn't been brought up since that story line resolved.

I'll still suggest Bone to you and everyone else anyway. It started out as a humor comic, but has turned into primarily a fantasy story. Try it out here

What do you read?

I read Black Panther- and it looks like Fantastic Four may become a regular purchase.

I read SiP once in a while.

I will also pick up one-shots/limited series that catch my eye. For example: The End- The Incredible Hulk

Otherwise- I look at the covers.

It is a shame, I want to like comic books- but I need characters that age.

The characters being frozen in time doesn't do it for me anymore- I outgrew them.

If Marvel announced from this day forward that characters are going to age, then I might be interested in picking up more of their books.

Just do what I do, read more non-Marvel books. The only Marvel books I read are ASM and Avengers (oh, and currently the Blackcat/Spidey mini-series).

Marvel wont have characters age...if anything the trend towards the ultimate retreads will continue.

Dont read much DC either..only JLA (and this might be dropped after the current story)..although I'll be picking up Batman (for the Lee/Loeb run), Supergirl (to the check out the return of Kara story) and the probably the new Aquaman series.

Easier said then done- I don't like DC (besides them suffering the same time problem).

I have tried other comics, but there are a list of problems-

I don't like dark books.

I don't like splatterpunk.

I don't like the characters. haha.

*shrug* Oh well. It is not as if I am looking to spend more money.

Of course the other alternative is to do what I am doing- trying to write a book for a buddy who wants to become a comic book artist.
