Starting in comics

Easier said then done- I don't like DC (besides them suffering the same time problem).

I have tried other comics, but there are a list of problems-

I don't like dark books.

I don't like splatterpunk.

I don't like the characters. haha.

*shrug* Oh well. It is not as if I am looking to spend more money.

Wow, are you always so hard to please? You just eliminated ninety percent of everything.

I really suggest you give Bone a try, it's not dark, there's no splatterpunk, there are quiche jokes, it has some of the greatest lines ever (?Stupid, stupid rat creatures!? and ?Phoney! What are you doing here? And why are you naked??), and you can try it out for free.

My favourite comic is Gold Digger, an action/adventure series by Fred Perry (Antarctic Press).

You might like it; it's not Marvel or DC, it's not dark or splatterpunk, characters age and change.

Geoff.

Bone is definitely a good read. I met Jeff Smith at a local comic convention, and he drew a lil' Bone sketch in my Bone TPB. Great guy, great comic.

I've heard many good things about Black Panther (considered by some to be the best comic put out by Marvel) and Bone (one of the best independent comics on the market).

Having grown up on mostly DC and Marvel comics (more DC than Marvel), I'm definitely looking forward to the Loeb/Lee run on Batman, and the upcoming Superman-Batman book. I also read Supergirl and Young Justice, because Peter David is an entertaining read.

There's also some pretty good buzz on the ABC Comics line (a division of Wildstorm, in turn a division of DC Comics), by Alan Moore.

I wish I had a larger comics budget!

I'd suggest looking beyond the big 2...are you only willing to read men-in-tights books?

Some of the titles I've been enjoying lately that arent from the big 2 include:

- The 2 non-Marvel JMS titles (Rising Stars & Midnight Nation...cant wait for Dream Police).

- Buffy...it was starting to go a bit flat, but the crew change has turned it right around. Off course having Faith in the story could be whats doing it for me.

- Star Wars: Empire..new series set 3 months before ANH. Off to an OK start, although I'm not sure I like all the flashbacks to Episode 1/2.

- Nodwick, KODT, PvP, and Dork Tower..'Nuff said.

- Crossgen...I really like Sojourn, Ruse and Way of the Rat. Can't wait for Brath to start.

Yeah. I loved the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen trade. I'm willing to wait for the trade of vol 2 though.

Yep, the explaination (hinting really) was that the spider just awakened his inate powers. Of course that this slight revision is hardly a good reason to not read anything by JMS' and you'll miss some really good stuff if you do that.
As I understood it, the powers did come from the spider. However, the powers had nothing to do with the spider being irradiated - the radiation was just killing the spider, making its "mission" to bite Peter more urgent.

A great suggestion for a new comics reader would definitely be Brath, from Crossgen. The first issue of Brath will be on sale in January, so there's plenty of time to get on the ground floor with this title. Here's a brief description of the comic, from a recent interview with Brath writer Chuck Dixon:

“Brath premieres in January, with Andrea Di Vito, Brad Vancata & Rob Schwager on art. It’s Celts versus Rome. It’s not like Conan or other barbarian books in that Brath MacGaren is not a loner. He has a clan he’s loyal to. It’s more historical adventure than wandering warrior. But you’ll get all the barbaric action you’re looking for - tons of casts-of-thousands battles.”

You can also read more about Brath

If you want to pick up a book to try it out- either go with #1 or wait for #50 in october.

The next issue, #49, is tying up the death storyline for the moment- with BP storming the hell.. or something along those lines. All I got is the cover to get details from.

I know #50 has been said to be a good starting point.

FD

Edit: You may want to check out Priest's BP FAQ

It will do better justice to the comic then I am capable of doing.

Well I was in the comic shop yesterday and decided to pick up a few issues of BP. I got the Enemy of the State 2 5 issue run (41-45). They didn't have issue 1 in stock (but can order it). Even though I didn't know where the second BP came from the stroy itself was very good in providing just enough background to allow me to follow along.

The story, I felt, was excellent. If this is an example of how BP is written all the time I think I will be a fan for quite some time. I love how BP throws Stark's own comments about BP having a plan to take him out while ignoring the fact that Stark also had a plan to take out BP.

T'Challa has come a long way from his old FF days.

Oh and drawing the other BP and the villians he faces in Jack Kirby's style was a stroke of genius and a beautiful homage to the late Master.

Looks like I have quite a few back issues to find :D

Thank you Furn, I never would have tried BP if you hadn't made such a good sale job (heck i didn't even know BP had his own title!).
