Starting my Campaign - Bandit Raid!

The reason i put this on this part of the forum is because it doesn't really fit into the other forums. So now its on here.

I am starting a campaign in a western style game. My group will not be an adventuring party at the start of the game. They will be in a small town, which, at the beginning of the game will be the target of a bandit raid. After the raid local authorities (seeing how well they fought the bandits) will ask if they will chase after the bandits to save the people that were kidnapped and recover what was stolen, ultimately bringing the bandits to justice!!

When the raid happens i can see the group spread throughout the town, not able to help each other (not that they will even know each other at this point). What I'm looking for is ways to get my players involved in the action of the bandit raid, and give them motive (hopefully other than $$$$$$$) to pursue the bandits after they have left the town.

The order of events will be: 1) A peaceful day, broken by the bandits raid 2) the players working with the local authorities to fight the bandits 3) being recruited to pursue the bandits and 4) raiding the bandits hideout, saving lives and peoples treasure.

What are some important events that happen is classic, western bandit raids (i don't watch a lot of westerns so i wouldn't know). Pub being attacked, damsel in distress. but what else??

When my players catch up to the bandits how should the bandits layer be set up? A camp in a flat area surrounded by hills? in a cave maybe? What should be some obstacles that they come across, both while chasing the bandits and once they have found their hideout? Maybe coming across some savage animals that they either have to sneak around (letting the bandits get further away) or going through the animals (which would risk them getting hurt by the animals before they even faced the bandits).

Also, i think it would be funner if this wasn't just a "normal" bandit raid. So aside from just raiding for money and women, what could the leader of the bandits really be after. I have no idea (but I'm sure some of you do!).

NOTE: The game we are playing is Rifts, therefore the bandits (and players) will be riding mechanical and real horses while firing laser rifles at each other.

Any advice? Ideas??

Sounds like you need a Posse!

The bandits should be in a box canyon (good ambushing).
