Stephen Jay Gould

And let us not forget that Stephen J. Gould also appeared on an episode of the Simpsons. Ahhh, to be immortalized on the best television series ever.

The best college class I ever took was an honors course that dealt with Nature v Nurture. It was co-taught by the heads of the Biology dept and the Poli Sci dept. A great class with a lot of great ideas being tossed around. We read several of Gould's articles in that class.

For a second, and please take no offense folks, when I heard the last name Gould, I though they were talking about BOB Gould. You know from such wonderful movies as Scrooged. *pauses* *longer pause* Uhm I think he was in a few more! ;)

I think you mean Bobcat Goldthwait.

Anyway, I was stunned to hear he had passed. This was very sudden. One of our great thinkers is gone.

Wasn't Stephen J. Gould the figurehead of one side of the evolutionary debate among science writers and scientists, with Richard Dawkins at the other, or am I thinking of another evolutionist? I think I've read a book or two of his, but can't recall which one.

You're thinking of the right guy.

Even as an ultra-darwinist of the Dawkins camp, I am terribly saddened by the loss at such an early age of Stephan J. Gould. No where else in science was the debate so keen or so refreshing as in evolutionary biology. Dr. Gould has done so much to make the debate so accessable to everyone. I have enjoyed his books and his perspective. His contributions to the field speak for themselves. On a similar note Dr. Charles Rick recently passed away if anyone is familiar with his work. He was a prominant geneticist who, in his field was as big as Gould was in his.
