Personally, I think the WWE has been in need of a "witch hunt" for a long time now. Pro wrestling has turned a blind eye to drugs for too long and let big name performers slide on drug tests. When Scott Steiner returned to the WWE, he was asked to take a steroid test. He said he would only if Triple H took one, too. The whole matter was then quitely dropped.

Heck, for years WWE avoided doing shows in Oregon because the drug testing was mandatory.

And I do think they need an independent body to do the tests. Back when the Benoit story broke, there was a reporter for Sports Illustrated or ESPN who described the WWE tests as a joke. Basically, their standards for what tests positive is much higher than any other sport. So a football player who tests positive for the NFL would be clean at WWE. Plus and independent body wouldn't care if you were Triple H or Joe Schmoe and jobber. If you get randomly picked, you take the test.

And it shouldn't matter if wrestling is a sport or not. Plenty of jobs have drug testing. For my last job, I had to take one. About a dozen other people were there to take the test, too. No one screamed it was a "witch hunt" or anything. We all just peed in a cup and were done with it.

I don't think these drug tests should be done to prevent any future murders, but to prevent any more wrestlers from dying before they even turn 45. We should worry about more Eddie Guerreros, not Chris Benoits. :(

"Professional" Sportsmen have always tried to find an edge over their opponents, even if its shady or even illegal (by the rules of the game or society).

The current taste for steroids is no different.

While I don't condone people ruining their long term health in order to gain fame & fortune, I'm not going to knock their on-field performances for it- no calls for "asterisks" on records- but I'm also not going to defend them if they get caught.

By having a steroid scandal, "professional" wrestling gets to pretend they're a sport now.

If Ballroom dancing and tiddlywinks can be sports then so can the soap-opera of Pro Wrestling!

Only in Japan, pro wrestling is a sport. ;)

In the North American continent (and in Europe), everyone in the business consider it sports entertainment.

If college football is sports entertainment then we know each game is already fixed.

I've already begun to assume that the performance drugs are several years ahead of the tests now, and that there are many athletes out there who routinely get away with taking them.

snip...

On the other hand, if they all know they can get away with it, there will be no perceived risk to doping. I'm afraid we're quickly approaching this point.
One of the directors at my company used to be a competetive bicycler. Early in his racing career he said they didn't do any testing at all, so many people took speed to give themselves a boost. They started testing for amphetamines, so people laid off using those and found other things to take instead, until those were tested for. I assume this is still happening today.

The director says he never took anything but readily admits that he likes to believe that the one person behind whom he repeatedly came in 2nd place must have been doping, so that he can convince himself he was actually the better racer.
