Unattainable Ideal
Holy Toledo! I just finished Erikson's newest book, Memories of Ice, and I don't know how to express what this book has done to me.
Steven Erikson is simply the best fantasy writer since Tolkien. Bar none. Frankly, he's as good as Tolkien. I had to put the book down and go outside for a walk after several scenes, they were so powerful and overwhelming. Reading this book is a draining, exhausting experience. I've never read a fantasy novel, in fact I've read darn few novels of any genre, that has affected me so.
I pity you Americans, without a publisher for this man's work. He is staggering, a true genius, with a gift of imagination that almost frightens me.
Find these books. Read them. Your life will be never be the same.
The Malazan Books of the Fallen
The Gardens of the Moon
Deadhouse Gates
Memories of Ice
Holy smokes.
