Still gonna use my Book of 9 Swords, MIC, Spell Compendium, Heroes of Battle, & PH2

One of the reasons I had been resistant to 4e was that I had only recently (6 months ago) bought any 3.5 stuff. I had the 3.0 core books and that was it. Then I got Spell Compendium, Bo9S, Magic Item Compendium, PH2, and Heroes of Battle, which I liked and have used.

When I heard 4e was coming out [after WotC months and months of saying that "such rumors were laughable" and the 4e boards here being an april fools joke] I was truly surprised. I actually believed that it would be a long time before there was a 4e coming when they said that... I was upset cause I had just invested in 3.5...

But a lot of 4e stuff seems to fix problems that I have always been bugged by-- grapples, AOO, etc so I'd like to use it. So I decided that I will use 4e-- but I'm not giving up my 3.5 stuff. I've decided that until there is a 4e equivalent of each spell/feat/class/item/etc in said books, that I will be using them anyway-- albeit with a home brew conversion to 4e. Any player who plays in a game I run, or any DM who wants me to play in their 4e campaign will have to deal with this.

So, for instance, let's say that Fighters get all sorts of moves similar to Bo9S maneuvers, but for some reason Sudden Leap maneuver was not written in-- if I want it, I'll work w/ the DM to convert it for use in 4e-- and will do the same thing for players in my game.

I know spells go up to 25th level now-- we'll have to come up with a system/ eyeball it if we really want Assay Spell Resistance and they forget to put it in the PHB. I think for now I am thinking current spell level x3 +/- 1 or 2 depending on judgement. Same goes for levels of maneuvers, etc.

If magic items are going to be more rare-- all the more reason for nifty stuff from the MIC to be a possibility, instead of the very limited list that is sure to come off the bat.

In short-- I want my 4e games to be just as rich w/ material as my 3.5 were-- and no need to wait for WotC to "build up" their arsenal of extra classes/races/items/etc for 4e-- as I will draw on the rich arsenal of 3.5 material I have in the meantime. My 4e games will begin with as much variety as they end!

That's a good attitude, that I share. I also loved the Bo9S and the MIC - the Bo9S because of the mechanics, but 4E will have plenty of those mechanics. But the MIC is a treasure chest for me: It's full of ideas and interesting items, one of the reasons, why I liked it so much. The ideas for the items won't go away with 4E. That's the reason, why I don't mind 4E:

I already used my 3.5E books , and I will continue to use them. Just as people still convert stuff from 2E books to 3.5E. Conversion is something, that's lively in D&D, as well as homebrew. And older books are a great resource for this.

And I'm doing that. I'll try to convert stuff from the Complete Book of Eldritch Might, I will convert stuff from Heroes of Horror, I'll use my Book of Hallowed Might, I'll use my Magic Item Compendium, and I'll take my stab at the Eberron setting crunch.

And I'm gearhead enough to enjoy this, and if I'm happy with the results, I'll share it. And undoubtedly, other people will do the same, so I think within months, we'll have many takes on converted 3.5E stuff - a prospect I enjoy.

Cheers, LT.
