Stormbringer

firstborne

First Post
I'm considering picking up a copy of Chaosium's Stormbringer. I was disappointed with Dragonlords of Melnibone; How does Stormbringer (and by extension Chaosium's BRP system) compare to Dragonlords?

Do not know Dragonlords. But I know about sturm bringer.
It`a pure D100 system, skill based.
You have several weapon skills. (one for bow, one for sword one for sabre, ..
If you roll under your score you hit or you succed in the skill.
Pure, simple, deadly.

More world description than in Dragonlords of Melnibone.

And don't ever play Melniboner it's like playing a 10th leve group in a EL6 dungeon.
Giving Stormbringer an 4/5 rating.
If you get hands onthe old advetures , do it they are way cool.

Hope that helps.

BTW was disappointed with Dragonlords of Melnibone, too

The thing I've always heard about Stormbringer is that you really shouldn't use the random character generation rules. If you do, you might end up with a Melinibonean Sorcerer and a Farmer from Pan Tang.

*shrug* I always thought that was one of the fun parts of it. It's an old-school Chaosium rpg from the early '80s, so it's going to feel like one compared to the kind of stuff that's out now. It's fun, though. I still have my copy from '83 or so.

I dunno... I haven't read the rules myself, but it seems to me I'd feel a bit short changed if I had to play as a menial worker...

I'd highly reccommend Stormbringer, the system is decent and dramatic, the background wonderful, and Michael Moorcock's novels genre-defining. The latest edition, the fifth, tidies up a lot of the rules, and is very nicely presented. I've looked over Dragon Lords of Melnibone, and wasn't impressed either by the rules conversion or the way the background was repackaged. Darksyde Productions' liscenced supplement Corum is highly worth getting, and I at least am eagerly anticipating their next, Hawkmoon. What's more, it's worth reiterating that the old adventures are damn cool, and well worth tracking down.

I'm surprised Games Workshop doesn't sue as that's one of the 'charms' of the Warhammer FRPG as well. "But I'm a boatman! I can't fight the hordes of chaos!" "Quite you sniveling worm! I, Dura'thaon the high prince of ten thousand command you take up your paddle and attack!"

I also highly recomend Stormbringer. It is a very nice game, much superior than DLoM in every aspect. The rules are easy to play and combat is fast and lethal. Character generation is dice based but it is not hard to adapt a point based system. There is a good amount of setting information and all supplements I've seen are pretty good. I also recomend the Corum supplement, published by Darcsyde, as an excellent expansion of the game to includes other worlds from the million spheres.
