Since the boards are still up and down, Clayton emailed me his character and I'm taking the opportunity to post it for him while the boards are up.

I Ain't Changing It!

I am aware of stormfront.org but I dismissed the connection for the following reasons.

1. There isn't now, or ever will be, anything in any thread of ours that anyone could ever construe to be racist or in support (directly or indirectly) of any kind of racial agenda. Even if someone went looking for such things because of the campaign name, they'd have a short trip to disappointment.

2. As Jay will tell you, I had a tough time coming up with a name in the first place, so if I do think of better one, I'll change it, but only because I'm not as happy with StormFront as I might be with something else.

3. I wanted a campaign name that carried with it a threat of bad things to come. "StormFront" carried with it that connotation better than anything else I could think of at the time.

4. There's a Billy Joel album entitled "Stormfront" which is probably where I subconsciously pulled the name.

i was going to post a followup earlier today, but i didn't get time. when i posted my comment last night, i was just recovering from the initial shock of seeing stormfront.org. you know that i know you didn't choose the name for that reason, right? anyway, i agree with all your points, and i was going to say we should keep the name. sorry for creating a fuss.

Ranstaar's Story - First Draft

Please feel free to comment on the first draft of Ranstaar's story, below. One thing I wasn't sure about: At 136, is Ranstaar still considered young? How old do elves get? Here's the story:

Ranstaar was born in the third month of the year after the appearance of the bright Dydeline star, to Elven parents living in the settlement of Hesterkin in the Great Tellurian Forest. Ranstaar’s youth was typical – he spent much time learning Elven songs and dances, and exploring in the forest surrounding the village with his friends. Later on, he spent many decades learning to make beautiful silver weaponry for the nobles of the settlement. Eventually, however, Ranstaar decided his true calling lay in exploring the natural world, so he decided to study under the tutelage of an Elven master ranger named Illyande. He was 82 years old at the time.

Ranstaar spent many years of study under Illyande, soaking up as much learning as the master could impart. Illyande taught Ranstaar all he knew of wilderness lore and how to track various kinds of creatures across all types of terrain. Over time, he also learned to command their attention and even make them obey his wishes. Ranstaar also learned move with almost complete silence and without being seen. With Illyande’s help, he improved his listening abilities and learned to shoot with a composite bow and to fight with a short sword in each hand.

Unfortunately, his instruction came to an untimely end one day when Ranstaar and his mentor Illyande had a terrible encounter with a wandering hill giant while adventuring deep in the forest. After fighting for what seemed like an eternity, Illyande sacrificed his own life while killing the creature, thereby enabling Ranstaar to narrowly escape death. On that day, Ranstaar made a solemn promise to avenge his master’s death by seeking out and slaying giants of any description whenever he could.

But Ranstaar was also consumed with grief, and so he returned to the home of his parents, completely disheartened. He spent many years there in various stages of mourning, either alone in his room or wandering through the forest. He also occasionally spent time alone honing his old silversmithing skills. Late one evening, though, some twenty years later, Ranstaar came to his parents and told them of plans he had been making.

He said that he had been thinking long and hard about the promise he made to avenge his master’s death so many years before. He had spent the time alone in his room studying everything he could about the giant race, and had spent time in the forest devising and testing strategies for killing them. The time had come, he said, to put his learning and strategies into practice. He would seek an adventure with a band of humans, explaining that he hoped to find a human monk who could teach him additional mental disciplines and physical skills that would help him to defeat any giants that he came across. He would leave them the next day to start his quest.

Ranstaar's Skills

To support my back story, I changed Ranstaar's skills to the following:

Move Silently - 4
Hide - 4
Animal Empathy - 4
Listen - 4
Wilderness Lore - 4
Weaponsmithing - 4

Also, have a couple of questions about elves in general. I was looking at them in the MM (just to help w/ my story) and I saw a couple of things that I wondered if I could take advantage of. It says they have these skill bonuses: Hide +1, Listen +3, Search +3, and Spot +2. It also says they have the Weapon Focus (Longbow) feat. Can I add these things to my character?

Ranstaar Rocks!!!!!!!!!! Great story, Doug. I can't wait to see how god connects our stories together. It's nice, though, having god ask for our forgiveness for a change. It usually works the other way!! You're absolved, god, of your sloth and putting petty things before the great task of our quest. Of course, if you'd like to grovel yet more, we may extend our mercy to you for more time.

In my opinion, StormFront is a good campaign name, but if you want to consider others, here are some suggestions:

BloodyMoon
DarkOmen
DeathKnell
Wrath of Hope
SunkenHope
Death by Midnight

Thanks, Xyffor, for the compliment. I worked on the story for quite a while. Had a hard time coming up with enough details to cover 136 years - that was the hard part!

As far as the DM apologizing, did you confuse my post for his? It was I who apologized for suggesting that we rename the campaign. I don't see any place where Chris apologized (or needed to!) He did a very good job of justifying his reasons why StormFront is a good choice. I think we should keep it.

Oh, I guess if everyone's OK with my story, I'll be joining you at the Inn pretty soon :) Tho' Chris will be creating a separate thread for our in-character stuff, as I understand it. I'm psyched about this!

DougP,

I'm really trying to get your handouts finished but I'm trying to do this right and it's taking a lot longer than I thought it would. I don't want anyone to lose interest before we get started but I also don't want you to lose interest after we have begun. So be be patient a little while longer. I believe it will be worth the wait. I have it all worked out, (I even have it written) I just have to type it and do a little more research on the city map and some other behind the scenes stuff.

Behold, Ranstaar . . . the repentance of god (or as close as he's capable). I wan't talking about the StormFront thing. I was talking about how long Xyffor has been waiting in that damn inn. :) Just joshing, of course.

But, like you, Ranstaar, I can't wait to get started. I read the thread about the orc warrior and it was truly awesome. It just makes me want to get into this game and see what it's all about. Now I can't wait to read Jay's storyline. I hope he posts it soon. With every post I get more excited.

I think it's going to be interesting to see how god introduces this whole thing and ties our stories together. I don't plan to make any changes to my storyline or stats and it's in the hands of god at this time.

I emailed god my character sheet, but he hasn't posted it yet. I don't know if (a) it didn't go through email appropriately; (b) god is still sitting on his throne grunting; (c) adjustments are being made to my stats; (d) god is still sitting on his throne grunting; or (e) b and d above. Maybe he'll let me know during one of my times of prayer if I should resubmit it or if I submitted it in the wrong way.

I think we've got a fun little group. I appreciate the opportunity to be part of it and hope to do my part to make it fun and interesting.
