THE SCHOOL OF MAGIC IS IN SESSION

The greatest minds in the multiverse meet at Strixhaven University. Professors convey fantastic secrets to eager students, and life on campus is frenetic. But danger lurks even here. Campus hijinks mix with mishaps and sinister plots, and it’s up to you to save the day.

Strixhaven™: A Curriculum of Chaos introduces the fantastical setting of Strixhaven University, drawn from the multiverse of MAGIC: THE GATHERING, and provides rules for creating characters who are students in one of its five colleges. Characters can explore the setting over the course of four adventures, which can be played together or on their own. Each adventure describes an academic year filled with scholarly pursuits, campus shenanigans, exciting friendships, hidden dangers, and perhaps even romance. This book includes a poster map that shows Strixhaven’s campuses on one side and location maps on the other.
  • New player character options including feats and a new background in the Character Builder
  • Includes new spells and magical items to use in your campaigns
  • Play through the book’s multiyear campaign, beginning as first-year students who study, socialize, and adventure their way to graduation.
  • Includes four adventures that can be played as stand-alones or woven together to create one campaign taking players from level 1 to level 10.
  • Encounter over forty magical, mysterious creatures and NPCs in the bestiary to battle in the Encounter builder and Combat tracker
  • Create new characters with the new player race, the owlin, one of the owlfolk who study at the university in the character builder
  • Experience Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering in new ways through the academic challenges, extracurricular activities and jobs, and relationships explored on campus.
  • Strixhaven can easily be dropped into any D&D world or campaign with the provided rules for adventuring as a student of magic.

Wow, 4 adventures for use in making a level 1-10 campaign? Pretty big departure from previous setting books, though it makes sense considering each adventure is supposed to be a year. Definitely emulating the Harry Potter shtick.
The MTG setting was theorized to be Harry Potter but magic, but there was no real resemblance other than being a magical school and having houses/colleges.... On the adventures... Wildemount had 4 or 5 adventures in it too

"No resemblance other being a magical school and having houses/colleges." I mean, that's pretty much the main thing about Harry Potter isn't it?

And the Wildemount adventures are all meant for for PCs to start at level 1, so it's a lot trickier to spin them into a campaign. These four adventures seem to be sequential, to emulate going through 4 years of school. That's a pretty big jump, to include a level 1-10 game in a setting book.

Only inasmuch as they both belong to the Magic school genre. In a setting where the characters are attending a school over the course of multiple years, it just makes sense for the action to occur in each year of attendance.

They actually did a pretty good job at putting distance between Strixhaven and Hogwarts in the cards, at least. One big difference is that this is a College.

Pretty cool that this is half Setting, half Adventure path.

Not really. Harry potter deals a lot with "real wolrd" and muggles (the people that do not have magic). also it's a secret school and a secret wolrd. Something Stryxhaven also does not have. Almost everything about Harry Potter is about magic being a secret in a normal world. To me this is like comparing MIB and Mass Effect because both have Alien Societies in them.

This also reminds me of a lot of people crying that HP copied LotR because both had scary creatures in black cloaks, even if the creatures have nothing but their apparel in common

I don't really want to get in a big argument about whether Strixhaven is an obvious Harry Potter motif, because I'll admit there are clearly some differences.

All I'll say is that the "magic school" genre really was kicked off by Harry Potter, and it's arguably in the top five fantasy properties of our time. Although Strixhaven does do some things to differentiate it from HP, it also is clearly meant to be an outlet for folks who want to roleplay the Harry Potter experience while sticking within the D&D multiverse and rulesets.
