Stupid Dwarf

"Orcs are like a box of chocolates, ya gotta bust em open to eat the gooey centers"

or

Now, if you can do the Pooh Voice, play a Dwarven Barbarian just so you can say:

"Oh bother. I'm going to have to rip your heads off now & feast on your entrails. Say, does anyone have any hunny? Entrails taste best when covered in hunny!"

he said int 5. not 3. you are giving Dubya too much credit.

Note: I didn't for for Bush (all 3 times, including his daddy), so don't take this as a where's the luv for the pres.

Bush has at least an average Int score. Most politicans have an average Int score. Even Paris Hilton & Jessica Simpson (lampooned by me above) have an average (or near average) ability score.

I work a lot now with people with mental retardation and other forms of moderate to severe disabilities (both children and adults). While this thread has been fun making fun of 'stupid' people. I think we should take a moment to remeber those less fortunate that do, indeed have 'below average' ability scores.

You trully want to see a 5 Int? Go to someplace that helps those with mental disabilities. It's not pretty, though it can be beautiful. Persons with disabilities can often function at very high levels (some forms of autism) or they can be essentially infants for their entire life.

I'm not saying play Rainman the Dwarven Paladin. Just remember those less fortunate. Both those with a mental disability & their loved ones whose life is altered in a way we would find very hard to adjust to.

Now, back to regular sarcasm & pessimissim & poor spelling.

"So, this dwarf was soooo stupid he tried to re-forge his broken codpiece while still......"

i totally agree with you. and i hope you note that most of the digs were just that. a way to take shots at the pres and not those with real disabilities.

i have worked in public health for many years now. i have worked with, for, beside, near, next to, etc... those with many disabilities.

this is a thread about a game. about how to play a dwarf in a fantasy setting. the key is to play it for fun. not to bog down with too much stress.

Well, I wasn't trying to make fun of stupid people by starting this thread, just to let you know. Thinking of those with mental disabilities, I am reminded of the movie 'What's eating Gilbert Grape?' with the kid. IIRC, he had autism. That was an impressive part to see acted. I can't imagine trying to copy something like that in game. Also not sure when it would cross the line between being fun and being too much work.

Said it before and saiying it again. Int 5 isn't mentally disabled. It's just dumb.

Digalo, you say you've worked in mental health. Do you know what percentage of people are mentally disabled to the degree we're talking about here? cause INT 5 is going to represent the 3rd through 5th percentiles.

Of course, that's with a 3d6 roll, and doesn't include Bonuses from leveling, Int Drain, effects of age, etc.

Okay, my Dwarf has an Intelligence of 5 [Not my choice, we rolled in order and the 5 landed on Int]. If it matters, my Wis is 16 and my Cha 15. I know there was a Dragon mag discussing this a while ago, but I have no idea what Dragon its in, if I even have it. So I was wondering, how well can I communicate. The PHB says I am as intelligent as an Otyugh, Griffin, and Displacer Beast. I have never had to play a character with such low Intelligence and am trying to figure out how to best roleplay him. I'm also trying to figure out how much the high Wis and Cha affects my character.

So, I'm looking for helping or pointage to previous help of different people with a similar problem. Thx much. :)

Watch "rain man". Thats your dwarf. He is slow, stutters, and often cant find the right word. He certainly doenst use big words. But because of his wisdom he can figure out a lot of things very well, just cant communicate as well as he thinks. Lol and dispite being a little annoying you gotta root for the guy, so he has a high CHR.

The question is: how exactly do we communicate?

If one of your other character's has a high Intelligence, have him save his language slots and pull a 'Thirteenth Warrior'.

The Arab in the movie (granted, he was effectively a bard/aristocrat) learned the language of the rest of his party on the fly.

I believe there are feats that allow extra language slots. An OGL source has a 'Linguistics' feat that gives four extra language slots. A member could take said feat (the worldly adventurer must be prepared!).

Maybe the high Int character can play translator?

  • He doesn't speak much, if at all. He doesn't need to. A stare or a gesture will get people to obey him. He may give one-word scentences (most likely commands) in a clear and forceful voice. he is not one for complex talk.
  • Even though he doesn't speak, his eyes give his intention. He's very good at conveying what he wants with body language, with the proper look or gesture. He doesn't need to speak -- people seem to know what he's thinking. He has a sagacity to him that his silence only enhances, and that earns him lots of respect from others he meets. They know he is straightforward -- when he makes a move, people pay attention.
  • While he will not quote the great works of literature at you, he will make you confident in his wisdom. He knows things not because he has studied them, but becuase he just *knows* them. He is special and significant becaue of this knowledge. He says that words make one vulnerable, so he doesn't deal with them. He doesn't develop a plan...he just *knows* what to do.

In short, he's kinda like some stoic peasant monk-hero or something. He knows the value of efficient communication, and for him the most efficient communication is simply doing what he knows to be true. His mind is agile, but he doesn't spend a lot of time mucking aruond with the logical process. It works, and it works surprisingly well -- his strident confidence causes others to fall in line with his plans quite eagerly.

He's persuasive and intuitive, but he has never felt a need for any sort of formal education. "I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!"
