stupid names

one of my former PC's named his after the battle mat cleaner Arbonne. the name itself was ok but he asked me to turn the cleaner towards him so he could read it to get the spelling right!

Ugh...One player I used to have would *always* use stupid names. We had:

Hooshoah Dadi
Guaco Mole'

It's cute as a pre-game joke, but I find it distracting in-game.

I really hate silly names. It ruins the game for me. Luckily I play with fellow gamers who like to role play as much as I do and put some thought into their names. To me playing with Bob the dwarf would pull me out of the game. I would not be able to take it seriously.

One DM I played with named all her elves from a welsh dictionary they were impossiable to spell but they gave them a cultural identiy. The one elf who was named differantly was an orphan and an outcast.

One source I use for names is a name your baby book based on ethnic names. I have found celtic and germanic names to be excellent for giving a nice fantasy flavor.

Our group was going to play Against the Giants a few years ago, just for fun (a few had played it way back when) and were going to use pre-gen PCs. So, my now ex and our friend were driving to game our friend says," I know my brother will play a magic user and use the name Smoke or Cinder," and they told us too when they arrived and the brother wasn't there yet. Later, when we all there, sure enough the brother picked a wizard and changed his name to Smoke. Everybody was rolling around laughing and he got pissed. Then, during the whole game, we kept making fun of his name: "Wow, you really smoked him," etc... He was really ticked then. In the end, we told him to be careful when he used verbs and nouns as names.

We had a player around 10 years ago without an ounce of original thought... all he did was look around the room.
Sony (a Thief named after his big screen)
Quasar (a Fighter named after his alarm clock)
Zenith (another Fighter named after a tv)

The same party had another 2 guys who were abit more Creative...

Enitocin ( Elven Ranger -nicotine backwards, the player smoked like a chimeny)

Ochan Cheddarwood (1/2E Druid - Ochan is Nacho backwards, named after a bag of Doritos).
The latter two were very well played characters.

Other lame mentions were from an Anne Rice freak... Lestat, Magnus, etc.

stupid names

years and years ago I rolled up a pair of characters who both had low CHA and the DM named them "Shnowzer and Rat-Nose" I later changed their names butmade a difference

In my group I think I've had the worst. He was a flamboyant fairy mage in 2nd ed. called Ricardo Antonio Prepusio de Santiago or something like that. Prepusio being Spanish for something Eric's grandma doesn't wish to read about.
