stupid PC names

Definitely Carlos the Dwarf. *pats himself on the back for the obscure Freaks and Geeks reference*

Really though, my biggest pet peeve with PC names are those named after already famous fantasy names. Therefore names like Gandalf, Raistlin, Elric, etc. just don't cut it for me.
Also any name with a hyphen or quotation mark has to go.

I'm of two minds about those.

On one hand... No, I hate them.

But at the same time, I'm occasionaly guilty of it myself.

It just depends, I suppose, how blatant the theft is... For example, I've been playing a half-elven bard by the name of "An'Desha"... Which is basicly a name stolen from a Mercedes Lackey novel. On the other hand, no one else around here reads them, and the character is nothing like what I stole the name from... and for that matter, I didn't totaly steal the name... Just the first name, and even then, it's a tad different ("day-sha" verses "dee-sha").

*shrug*

I know, I know, that's just rationalizing it, and I'll admit it. But if a DM had ever called me on it, I probably would have chosen a different one. It just popped into my head, and I liked the sound of it.

Hey! What is this about Francis being a sissy name for a boy? I'll have you know that my oldest and greatest (as Edina would say) is a half elven bard named Francis. Of course this came to be pretty convenient when for three years he was transformed into a girl (belt of gender change) and did not have to change his name...

The world is a cruel, cruel place.

I like to imagine my games to be voyages of discovery in far off wonderous lands, where just learning about the world is a majority of the fun --so I really don't like names that disrupt the 'fictive dream' I'm spinning for the PC's. And I love when they begin naming characters along the lines of my cultural naming conventions...

However, sometimes you just have to lighten up...

From a game I ran:

Sylvan Shwartz the human wizard who spoke uncannily like Woody Allen and who was always being mistaken for half-elven {"Not even on your mother's side? That would make you elven, I think" "What is with you? I told you I'm not elvish. You've got a complex, you know that...."}

From games I played:

Torquemada Scarletwind the dwarven Inquisitor

S'sa'dab, the dwarven fighter that my 6'6'' friend Derek played...

The Ranger with No Name

Faran Selenius Heit, eventual Lord of Castle Bakewell and County Bakewell {famous for their many kinds of tart...}

I sure I can think of more later...

Most of my memories of silly/stupid names comes from playing in Jr. High; my first character was named "Avenger the Elf." Clerics were always "Father_Yourname."

Still, in my college game I had a few lame ones in my game group; one guy whose names were profanities spelled backwards, and a LG cleric who went by Justin Fair.

Now that I'm playing NWN, I see a lot of them online.

I don't think someone who came up with a juvenile name (especially as a bite-me to the DM) would last more than a few seconds in one of my games, unless I were running Macho Women with Guns .

I do have a DnD character named Curse, but it's not a joke name--it's part of the character's background. (Technically it's not even a name. It's what her good-for-nothing mother called her all her life.) It's not an issue except for the occasional Remove Curse jokes. ;)

I used to play with a pair of brothers(still game with one of em, actually: the good one) and the other one had such wonderful names as Sir Honorable, Urin'alc'ake, and Raipe Macheen.

Lovely.

Although frankly, given that I've been in a party with a hermaphrodite dwarf named Jug Band, I've pretty much been desensitised to bad names.

I don't allow them in my games though.

Maybe I've been lucky in that when I treat my players as adults and equal participants in creating a good gaming world I don't get screwed over with juvenile crap. I suspect if I pulled some juvenile my way or the highway it's my game world crap, I'd get lots of juvenile responses. (Though I have to say I've gotten a crop of inconsiderate bastards who don't give advance notice when they will be no shows, is anyone here, Beuler, anyone, and I do hope they're reading this so I can continue my passive aggressive spree on top of my straight out verbal complaints)

And I apologize if this is coming out rudely, because that's not my intent. And maybe juvenile isn't the best word to use because it is kind of inflammatory, but I'm so impressed that I actually spelled it right it's got to stay. (Dyslexics of the world untie)

But, but, but, why has no one told of Sir Osis of Liffer? And all the knights: Sir Inade, Sir Ind o' Pity, Sir Loin of Beef, etc.

And my favorite: Eric the Generic Cleric.
