Stupidity of Comics

Babs and Arthur and their Flaws

One of the reasons I don't read comics as much as I used to, is that it's hard to shut my brain off all the time.

What do I mean?

Why is the original Batgirl still in a wheelchair? Why did Aquaman never get his hand back? It's acceptable for people to come back from the dead, but they can't use some type of super technology to do relatively 'normal' things? Heck, have one of the spellcasters do something. "Specter, we saved the space time continum. Give Barbra the abilty to walk."

With Barbara Gordon, she's rejected it out-of-hand. She had the chance to get all her hurts fixed via a Lazarus Pit, and decided that the Price Was Too High.

With Arthur, his missing hand (which he compensates for quite nicely with his water-hand) it's a memento mori.

Does that help? Having a character come along and handwave all the problems away makes for very dull storytelling indeed.

They do, and it's been done.

I try not to think about it.

No offense, but about 98% of the Marvel Universe should be dead.

They've shown how an old man could use a Civil War rifle to hit a target three miles away.

That's a new one on me. <puzzled>

Now I know, what fun is that, but the point being, given the current state of technology in most comics, everyone should be wearing something like Captain America's chain mesh body armor or some type of protection.

I mean, I imagine a comic where the Punisher is laying in bed one cold January morning and feels his side groaning. "I'm going to get Wolverine back the best way possible." And then goes and kills all the non-bulletproof X-Men.

As far as the body-armor goes - they do. X-Men uniforms also act as body-armor (with the exception of Emma's scraps-o-fabric but hey, she's got a diamond-body form anyway). Ditto the FF's unstable molecule deal.

Daredevil gets beaten to naughty word all the time. So does the Punisher. And Frank's a stoic type, but his old injuries plague him fairly often if memory serves.

Actually, Joe Kelly had originally planned to write a storyline regarding her resurrection (he wanted to use the character as a recurring villainess for Deadpool). He subsequently changed his mind, though. He eventually explained her "resurrection" in Deadpool #0, in which it was revealed that the new Vamp was actually a clone created by Arnim Zola (along with many other clones of dead/lame supervillains). Deadpool ended up killing them all... again.

Sorry about that. I know I read an online interview with a writer who brought back a dead character without knowing said character was dead, I guess I confused him with Kelly (since I never read the issue where they explain Vamp's reappearance).

Emma: Jean Grey is dead, Agent.

Brand: Yeah, that'll last.
Joss, I love you. :p

Heh, in the current issue I like where they're fighting the monster and everyone has they're thoughts which are all deep and meaningful until you get to Wolverine who's thoughts consist of "I like beer."

Glamor lost in time...

Ya know, a long time back, the books didn't look stupid to us. Cause we, the readers/collectors weren't ween off them yet...wait, not fully edcuated in the ways of comic fandom(if you were, ignore this dribble).

Time past, and our exterior environment has been preoccupied by other things. Books, video TV & Games, and at last...the PC. Ah yes, the Personal Computer, the gate that opened up the paths of communications with other collectors. In the early eighties, having one was rare, and expensive, so the only means of talking another collector/friend, was through mail, telephone and meeting at the conventions.

Oh yes, there were the news mediums, like the Comic Buyer's Guide, and others...news related at a slow turtle pace. To express ourselves was usually seen in the fan pages at the back of the comic book, censored of course...eventually, that was phased out. All delayed.

Then came the INternet...and lo...the explosion of expression was born, no more long delays in hearing news, everything is now in real time, a area that was unknown journey for all.

Things we did know or not, we got educate more through the internet, the comic world was brought from a arm's length, to right at our feet.

Perception was altered, the way the book is looked at now, it is more examined in detail then our own telephone or credit card bill.

From here, we went from being a innocent fan, to being an instant critic, more so, through this medium, the glamor look has disappeared...and what do we have left?

On that I don't know, still looking.

Answer to both: Nobody has managed to sell the right editor on the idea. These two characters now have these features in their stock descriptions. Thus, changing them would require convincing editors that it would improve the bottom line. Why are soap opera characters so dimwitted and evil? Soap opera viewers are happy with it. Those who aren't just don't watch.

Take Barbara, for instance. She hasn't been Batgirl for a long time. There's a new Batgirl running around. She has settled in her new role as Oracle. She could easily start walking again and remain Oracle (and given how technology seems to be heading towards wireless more and more, she'd be a better Oracle for it).
Actually, BoP has had Barbara walking. Once was a couple of issues a couple of years ago with a girl who could heal people, at least temporarily. Spoiler:
The second was just recently. It involves a deal with Brainiac.

Neither has caused any harm to the title - they've both been good stories so far.

Was that in a Birds of Prey issue or an actual Superman issue? Has a Superman issue even noticed she moved to his city?
