Sucking the morrow out of Midnight.

I had the idea of running a campaign set after 'the bad guys had won' in my own homebrew world way back in the 2nd edition days. It's also not hard to figure out that I'm a Tolkien fan.

From the reviews I have read, Midnight seems like it would suit me just fine, but there were a couple of things I didn't like.

How hard would it be for Midnight to move on over to 3.5 ?

Is the setting so tied in with the rule structure (limited classes, rare magic items, no gold, different magic system, etc) that it would be hard to drop out the things I didnt like and keep the things I do like ?

For example:
I would probably keep Gold as a currency.
I would probably use the standard D&D classes.

Thanks!

Well, I'm in the process of converting Midnight into 3.5 myself. It's not hard at all, just adjust all references to absolete/renamed feats, skills, and spells and you're just about done.
I'm trying to decide which PrClasses to allow though. It sounds fairly reasonable to allow the Frenzied Berserker (typical for Orcs, Kurgun Dwarves and Dorns I'd say), doesn't it?

Ok, bad idea if you ask me.
The lack of gold is a huge part of the mood. Not only does it clearly show the economic collapse of the world, but it also forces PCs to barter. Want to buy a new sword? What do you have to offer? Plenty of roleplaying opportunities and adventure hooks with every purchase!
Keeping the standard D&D classes is also a bad idea. All spellcasters are removed because of the way magic works in Midnight. But you can still play a "ranger", simply by learning some druidic magic with your wildlander. The only removed class that does not cast spells is the monk and it is replaced by the defender, which is more fitting for the setting (and allows more costumization anyway).

Question: why would you want to change these elements in the first place?
