Sudden Extend Metamagic Question

Kaledor

First Post
I have a player with a summoner character.
He wants to take the Sudden Extend Feat (Complete Arcane) at first level to make his Summon Monster I's a better spell in combat (so it will last two rounds, instead of one).

To me, it seems like he can take the feat (there are no prereqs) and that he can use the feat b/c it says that it does not alter the spell's level (like normal Extend Spell does).

Am I reading this right?

Now the question of SHOULD he take it...
It seems like since you only get one use of it a day that it's pretty weak. I think that he's taking to only make his 1st level summons more effective in combat, but in a few levels his summons are going to last plenty long and Extending them won't be so crucial.

Thoughts?

Does anybody have a better thought for Summoner's Feats (beyond Augment Summoning)?

You have it right, and it's not that good. I know some good summoning feats for Druids from Eberron, but that probably doesn't help. There is a PDF on summoning feats found here

I played a Clr (all the way up to Clr 21) who specialized in summoning. I found it best to go with Augment summoning; those stat bonuses are really worth it, especially between caster levels 5 and 11.

Extending the time the summoned monsters stick around is rarely worth it.

If I were this player, I'd be working collaboratively with the DM to come up with some cooler/better summoning feats. The (non-campaign specific) RAW has very few worthwhile ones, IMHO.
