There's a recent thread here where every Dragon issue is reviewed: Dragon Magazine: Lets read the entire run. Starting with the precursor magazine: The Strategic Review (this is where TSR got it's name from) and currently at #133. (Edit: This is the thread by (un)reason)

There's also the Classic Dragon reviews take 2 by Glyfair.

There's this small thread asking about Good Dragon articles from a long time ago.

Last not least there's Erik Mona's old thread "Classic" Dragon articles where he asked for favorite articles "for a top secret project" that turned out to be the Paizo Dragon Compendium iirc.

As for my faves:

I always like the ecologies articles very much. (Here's an index to them. Also check out Richard's signature for his excellent unpublished ecology articles)

I also like the Arcane Lore series, where different spellbooks with a few new spells and some history were presented.

The Waldorf letters deserve a mention, but you can read them easier at the thread linked where they are all compiled.

I'm not sure if the Dragon Annuals are included in the Archive, but they were highlight issues most of the time iirc.

Oh and i hope you are aware that the Dragon Magazine Archive is a collector's item worth quite a bit these days...

Yes, where is (un)reason in this thread?

I do apologise. You know what it's been like trying to get on here these past few days.

Anyway. Other people seem to have covered all the commonly cited ones, and if you want a detailed asessment, you can read the whole thread, so I'll just give a few that have really stuck in my mind.

Most of SR6. Easily the best of the strategic reviews in my opinion, full of cool little bits to steal. Bards and the alignment system in particular stood out to me.

The hells stuff, obviously. The praise Ed Greenwood gets has proven entirely justified in general, but these really do kick ass.

The baba yaga module. Extradimensional wackiness suitable for a wide range of levels done right.

The repeatedly recurring witch articles. See the way the rules are revised and refined in those early days in action.

In fiction, The Doctor, and Everybody eats everybody on sunday's planet are the ones that have most stuck in my mind, for completely different reasons, but both do what they set out to do brilliantly.

Unfortunately, they are not. Vaguely annoying. I've still managed to get hold of them, and plan to review them when I get that far though.

In fiction...
Ah, yes. I forgot fiction.

In my opinion, Niall of the Far Travels, from the legendary Gardner F. Fox is the best fiction series published in The Dragon. We had a few great one offs from great authors, but this series was very strong.

Erik Mona has said he actively tried to get permission to reprint the series as part of Planet Stories, but was unsuccessful, as a matter of fact.

I always liked reading the forum section. Before the Internets it was the place to go for insightful discussion on D&D. Perhaps the best known Forum letter was the one describing how to use kobolds (I think) to great effect against very high level characters. Anyone remember that article and the issue of Dragon it appeared in?

Ah yes, the forum, where the flame wars we all know and love today had their start.

Most of the Dragons I read and have were late 90s, so only about the first half of them are on the CD. Can't really recommend much for fiction, and some of it was terrible. The one series that sticks out are the Fool Wolf stories, but most of them are post-CD. I think the first one should be in one of the very last issues on the disc.

I was digging around today in some old Cd's and found my Dragon Magazine Archive, which I've never actually read much of. So rather than poking around randomly trying to find interesting article I thought I would call on the collective knowledge of ENworld.

What articles would you recommend looking up out of the first 250 issues of Dragon that are real standouts? I'm looking for anything of real historic interest to the hobby, of exceptional quality, or that has stuck with you and made a difference in the way you game. So if you could pick a couple articles and say, "hey read these!!!" which would they be?

Somewhere between 50-100 is Baba Yaga's hut adventure, which is really sweet.

There are a few other adventures in that issue range. Anda nice dungeon Adventure in 131.
