A Bard seems like the perfect fit class-wise from your description. A tiefling bard could be quite interesting. Although maybe 'unassuming presence' is slightly off. Then again with bluff you can disguise the fact you are a tiefling and become as unassuming appearnace-wise as possible. Good natured ... is there anything to say tieflings can't be good natured? Gnome is a tighter fit on the positive side of things. But I think I personally would find the challenge of hiding my true nature, to all intents and purposes appearing human in order to be liked, loved and accepted more interesting than playing a gnome. I don't know your preferences but on the darker side of things, a teifling matches pretty well.
His hidden demon nature, something he loathes about himself could be the source of his lack of self-confidence, and his deep seated fear of being left alone and dejected (rejected?). Perhaps his natural curiosity pulls him towards forbidden knowledge in some way. Multiclassing him into Warlock would be interesting here. Again, the personal vices would fit like a glove here as would all those negative feelings he surpresses.
As for stealth ... A bard can get stealth no worries. And as a Bard, being able to multi-multiclass you could even multiclass into Assassin as well as Warlock (becoming the King's Assassin?) and get Shadow Walk to become extra stealthy. You'd have to invest 13 in DEX though ... but that's not silly if you want to be stealthy.
As far as being able to know a bit about everything ... no one can match the Bard.
Loyalty. Is there a particularly loyal race? A dog? Hmmm ... can't see the king taking advice from a dog ... or a gnoll ... I think that is something that any character can choose to play about their character.
(Note: a Tyrion-style gnome would be fun to play ... but he isn't exactly good natured or lacking in self-confidence, and I seem to remember he was quite vocal and open about his negative feelings, so not a perfect fit either
