Suh-WEET Airship battle in last night's game

Here's the picture gallery of the action:

"...Just outside the warp portal from Cinder, however, the Gregor's Hope ran into trouble. A group of orcish pirates in a captured Nemaean merchant cruiser intercepted the 'Hope and fired over the bow. Demands were made to surrender from both sides. Windbear, who was piloting the 'Hope brought his vessel's weapons to bear and the pirates responded. One of the pirates, a vampiress, quaffed a flying potion and flew across the void to the players. The rest of the orcs followed with volleys of arrows, and the players returned fire- setting fire to the rigging of the Nemaean ship.

The Half-orc leader conjured a wall of wind to deflect any more incoming arrow attacks.

As the ships closed upon each other, Jaros used a holy smite. If I had any idea how dangerous this was, I would have made a tougher encounter (The orcs were all level 3 warriors)-- it left almost all of the orcs on the ship dead, except for the leader, a half-orc cleric. So by this time, there are like 2 orcs, the half-orc leader, the vampiress.. and thats it.

The vampiress fought againt Brede on the deck of the players ship. She almost got her fangs into one of Windbear's gnoll crewmen upon arrival, but missed her first set of attacks, and suddenly found herself facing Brede, and his bastard sword, Nyland's Fury. Brede and the vampiress fought it out for a few rounds, circling each other on the deck.

Meanwhile- the enemy leader- a half-orc clerc, decided to return the favor of divine retribution to Jaros; he called a flame strike from above. Although Jaros dodged out of the way- Malias' cohort Oakan and Magnus the paladin took the full brunt of the fire blast, which also set fire to the deck, rigging, and sails of the Gregor's Hope.

While the gnoll crewmen scrambled to put out the blaze, Magnus crossed the void between the ships by drinking a flying potion of his own--quickly followed by Malias, who used his boots of striding and springing to jump into the bow-rigging of the pirate ship.

Meanwhile, Nyanin the archer snapped off the heads of three of his arrows and shot them into the heart of the vampiress. She collapsed in a heap of dust on the foredeck of the 'Hope.

Finally, Malias and Magnus fought it out with the enemy cleric and the two remaining orcs and eventually defeated all of them. Magnus lead with a flying charge attack, that bowled the enemy cleric over.

Magnus just happened to have some skill in piloting airships, so he brought the enemy ship back under control. They did some quick in-flight repair work and -- now they had a second airship!"

around thanksgiving every year you can usually find at least one t.v. segment on some variety show about a guy in n.y.c. who builds ship models using nothing but turkey bones, except for the sails, which he makes from silk hankies with wild colors.

one of those ships is all that could have possibly made that evening cooler!

awesome efforet gents, thanks for sharing it with us.

Wish, I had stuff liek that for games. What you did there with the ships is the kinda imginary scenarios that make this game great.

Thxs for sharing, wish I could have been in that game.

In Flames!

Well, we forgot to bring the 'on-fire' miniatures (basically this is furniture stuffing tinted with orange, red and black. They belong to a member of the group who is really into modelling. He made up a whole bag of them, including a 'breath-weapon' attack and several 'fireball's

Take a look at thisepic battle against the Temple of Fire to see extensive use of the fire miniatures. You will have to skip to probably page 9, 10 or 11 of this album to see the full effect of the fire-battle, when the Flame Savant Destine completes her final transformation into a greater fire elemental.

Wow. I'm speechless. Luckily this is a print medium so I can write.:D It's like playing with dioramas.

Hey what happened with the dragon and the griffon after the orc ship was captured?

Ah, those were stand-ins. :(

The dragon and the griffin were stand-ins for a pair of hungry Yrthaks that attacked later, just before the airship made landfall. Hey you tell ME where to get Yrthak miniatures!

That was kind of a lackluster encounter, and I blame myself. I think the CR's were simply too low to let them stand-up in battle for more than 4 rounds or so. I had hoped to snatch Jaros the cleric off the deck or see if one of the wilder players would try a mid-air tackle.

We do play with dioramas a lot- one of the players has a degree in sculpture and supplies Hirst Arts molds. I have a fairly large collection of Master Maze and a lot of Grendel scenery pieces, and another player (Randy, who hosts the games) is just now getting into scenery. We assemble most of our stuff from dollar store resin-cast pieces, toys, the ships are display models that just happen to be the right scale, aquarium scenery (seriously, great stuff), and occiasionally we build actual models out of wood or foam-core board.

Randy built a really nice set of "rough walls" and a watchtower thing out of twigs. I've done a watch tower, a small keep (destroyed now), a weird spider-web thingy, and a few other pieces. They really aren't hard or expensive.

We all agree on one thing: even cruddy/badly painted miniatures and rubber/plastic monsters look cool against scenery, whereas really well-painted miniatures don't look all that great on a battle-mat or a piece of felt.

Hungry Yrthaks, ahh I see.

I notice you use a laptop while gaming. Pray tell, what programs do you use to assist in running your games?
