suicide bomber zombies

One of the Corpsecrafter feats in Libris Mortis causes your undead to explode when slain. It's quite handy if you like having hordes of undead followers. The main problem is that it only works on undead you personally animate. If you're into summoning and rebuking it's not much help.

Yeah I set the party up against three spell stitched ghouls with the added corpse crafter explosive corpse shtick. The party got a little loud before entering the room. The ghouls knew they were coming.
At first the ghouls all cast spider climb, and started up some ranged combat. The spell caster continually failed to pierce SR, and the magic missles kept raining down on us from above. Monk was near useless and could not penetrate their DR much. We exchanged volleys for five rounds.
Finally when they were out of spells they huddled together and descended.
That tight nit circle was gruesome. We all got paralyzed and only the fighter was standing. he killed one then cleaved the other. luckily the explosive energy burst was resisted by the second Ghouls SR So he was able to cleave and kill. The resultant explosions however slew both the ranger and the monk, both paralyzed and near 0 hp. The mage was still failing his SR checks and that last explosion knocked out the fighter. Unfortunatly the mage was trapped in the room. We all got turned to ghouls. It was rough.
The moral of the story is that two belts of healing and an amulet of retributive healing do not a cleric make.

Good necromancers don't make zombies if they want to stay good, and "suicide" requires not being already dead, but ... it's a classic idea, found in many excellent video games. Icewind Dale I, Starcraft, and even old D&D (the "gas spore" which looks like a Beholder).

Diablo 2 used that a lot in the expansion. There were some that would run up to you and then explode, but strangely wouldn't hurt your cohort. Also, one of the bosses was greatly fond of corpse explosions. I don't think that either of these really count as zombies, of course.

Lightening Enchanted zombies is just as effective and pretty much the same affect.

Also Halflife 2 did the exploding zombie thing.

Sounds like an excellent fight, though unfortunate for your party. A party without a cleric or druid can indeed have it rough against the undead.

Yes, but do their exploding zombies heal other nearby undead? :]
