Suitable Replacement Mount for A Wemic Paladin

Personally, I'd go with some kind of flying creature that can lift the Wemic or perhaps a Celestial symbiont of some kind that provide a pair of wings. I can definately see the Celestial Simbiont that grows a pair of wings on the Wemic but can only be summoned as per the Paladin mount. Over time the wings would provide greater maneuverability, speed, etc and some of the powers a mount receives as well.

Though the mount is missing, with no extra attacks and such, and not as much interaction for roleplay (though you could, a symbiont mount with telepathic communication would be sweet). However it provides flight a powerful ability as well. Not a bad trade, but just a thought.

Whatever you do, try to keep in mind the advantages/disadvantages of the mount:

A paladin's mount is normally larger than the paladin, making it tough for any kind of indooor adventure.

A paladin's mount's attacks are usually way worse than the paladin's in attack bonus and damage.

A paladin's mount has survival "issues' since it has fewer hit die and worse saves than the paladin.

A paladin's mount requires equipment which must be paid for by the paladin.

A paladin's mount requires the paladin to use several feats to maximize it's potential (Mounted Combat, Ride-by Attack, Spirited Charge).

On the up side, it's an intelligent mount with a number of special abilities that help it survive.

Finally, keep in mind that in some campaigns the chances for the paladin to use the mount are few and far between.

On balance, a Wemic paladin should not get any feats to make up for not having a mount. What a Wemic should get, maybe, is a paladin's rider. Some sort of small humanoid creature that can ride him - preferebly something animal-based. Perhaps a monkey or a baboon - they could wield a lance, but would not rise to the level of being an NPC. I kind of like that idea.

I like the idea of a celestial cohort/rider.

She should have the ability to summon large objects to crush her foes.

She should wear ruby slippers.

She should be a bard.

Later, you can get other cohorts -- a small iron golem and a man-sized straw homonculus.

They should be bards too.

:) :) :)

Couldn't happen. The wemic paladin didn't gain his Aura of Courage until after that adventure. :)

At the risk of sounding contrary, nothing. Thats like asking what to give the dwarven druid instead of +2 sv poison, since druids get immunity anyways...

There is a difference, though. The paladin's mount is a gift from a sentient being, namely his god. If the paladin is a loyal servant of the god, is that god going to look down and say, "Tough luck, buddy—you should have been born human!"

I would go with a celestial lion companion, increasing in power as the paladin's mount. The rider idea seems a bit silly to me.

(By the way, I love the idea of an intelligent mount using Ride to help others ride him or her. Nice one.)

Well he'd still be able to call the mount he just wouldn't be able to ride it... he could use it as a companion to tho, and have it just fight with him.

There's a bunch of rules in place for alternate mounts in things like defenders of the faith.. if you want neat things like celestial lions, there'll be tradeoffs to be made.. if you follow the defenders of the fath suggestion you wouldn't be able to get said lion til you were lvl 7, and honestly that seems a bit lenient considering its power

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the input, though I still haven't decided what I'm gonna do yet. I like the idea of losing ECL's at a set rate, and the idea of the Celestial Lion seems pretty good.

I've discussed it with the player and she likes both of the above ideas, but I'm still looking for something with more flavor.

BTW, I considered giveing her a Hound Archon as a rider at 10th level, but I can't quite seem to decide if that is fair or not?

Keep it coming guys.
