Summon Monster to Summon Monks?

Look at the CR of creatures available at each level, take an average and use that to indicate the human class level (or reduce by 1 if you want to use Aasimar/tiefling for that genuine planar feeling).

Possibly reduce class level by an extra 1 for casting classes (since the range of creatures with useful magic has been greatly reduced)

I wouldn't do it, but if I was going to that is how I would judge it.

I would take the same approach as Plane Sailing, but remember a high level summoned human normally has no equipment neither mundane nor magical.

Hence (perhaps) the choice of monks. Or if they did, it would vanish when the spell ended.
Monks with Vow of Poverty? who gets to choose the build??

There certainly are extra-planar human monks. Hmmm..... But you generally summon a 'monster' and not a 'class'. Summoning a wizard or sorcerer would be interesting even if they don't have spell components. I'll need to consider that when I start casting planar ally and gate.

Monks are a flavour thing. But I might consider making some kind of extraplanar monks instead of humans. I hadn't thought about the gear thing at all, but that's a good point.

Githzerai. But am I remembering right when I say that I've read somewhere that you can't specify class levels on a summoned monster? Otherwise people would be pulling some really interesting summons out . . .

By the way, where was that spelled out again? I can't seem to recall it.

I think it is in the DMG where it gives options for summoning like "always summons the same creature" and something about planar binding them, give them some magical gear and from then onwards when they appear they are equipped with "summoned" versions of that gear which disappear when they do.

My memory tells me that it was on a LH page, and the facing page was a new chapter start... but I can't be more precise than that.

Cheers

Yes. A summoned creature-with-gear would appear with its gear. That is, the gear it's carrying at the moment it's summoned...

Could be fun, once in a while, to summon a monster such as an astral deva, and get one in nightshirt with a night-cap and a pillow tucked under her arm, rather than the usual armor and heavy mace of disruption...
