I like summoning a whole bunch of weaker creatures.

I don't generally stick to one type, though. I made a big list of all the creatures I can summon along with their HD, hp, attack bonus, damage, speed, special abilities... different things for different situations.

Anyway, this is more of a General question than a Rules question.

Back in 3.0e (when summoned creatures could teleport) lantern archons where fantastic messengers and at higher level scads of them could be summoned as teleporting hit squads. Scads of formian workers were also useful to summon in 3.0e since they could work together to make whole and cure you.

Unfortunately things got much less interesting when things changed in 3.5e... Lantern archons are still neat little translators and their aura of menace and aid spells can be useful; there are far fewer useful spells that you can get out of your little helpers now though. I hear that Bison and Giant Constrictors are quite good bang for the buck

Summon Nature's Ally: Giant Crocodile. Plus Augment Summoning and Animal Growth.

The thing ends up with 15' reach and a +31 grapple check, from memory.

Summon natures ally is fantastic for elementals... much better than wizard summoning, you can get earth-gliding scouts or burninating allies much earlier.

(not burninating OF allies, naturally)

I like the memphits, one for every occasion. I used lesser planar ally to get mine, I'm not sure if they are on the list. They have nice area effect abilities, and nice damage reductions, elemental immunities.
