One of them sandpaintings (I think they are tibetian).

A big mandala of coloured sand.

pro: They look nice. They need perform of craft skill, and concentration checks, so are not just finished, they are an "accomplishment" . so they have the pride reward :)
con: they are not protable, and very time consuming.

That's for the suggestions guys. It's down to being either an hourglass or an sandstone.

Again, I think an Hourglass is really cool myself but to me it would symbolize a different sort of magic.

Can someone enlighten me as to what sandstone really looks like?

Hourglass would be my first thought -- one such that, as soon as the sands ran out, the summoning's duration ended.

However, a sieve would also be cool -- something to "purify" the sand that passed through it. Basically, it'd be like a big Britta filter, but for sand -- many layers of mesh, getting finer and finer -- you dump a load of sand in the top, shake it for one full round (or however long it takes), and where the purified sand strikes the desert sand, you get your elemental.

Or a maraca. (Made from the bone of a SANDGORGON!)

Just a late thought;

How about a tortoise shell, instead of a sea shell? Maybe something similar to a tortoise-shell rattle, but with the large hole left open, so you can scoop sand into it, speak a power word, etc. and then pour it out to summon/create the elemental.

I'd go for a miniature obsidian pyramid. Much like the freaky Cenobite (sic?) box in Hellraiser - you press the sides and pieces of it slide around, while an eiree light shines from the gaps.

If you do the whole Hellraiser thing with the pyramid - then the 'unlocked' mode could look like the warped crystal RangerWickett came up with? Possibly the crystal is used as a 'wand' to direct the elemental?

Who's doing the summoning in this case? Might help with the ideas?

I am sure you have seen a rain stick, turn it one way and the seeds inside fall making the sound of rain, you could have the much the same filled with sand.

Statue of a god - which god controlled the sand, had it as their domain?

Animals: Sand snake, sand worm, sand lizard, sand bug... Any could work.

Sand itself: just holding sand could be enough.
