Summoning, vivilors, and DND

Hi!

I hate summoning. I think the creatures you can summon rules as written are dull. Dull, dull, dull. Not to mention, the games I run tend to feature a lot of neutral character, so smite good and evil don't really enhance monsters much.

I have fiddled extensively with the cosmology of my DND game (monsters seem to be the think I fuss with in 3.5), but I can't seem to come up with a useful "alternate" template for fiendish and celestial creatures.

I like astral constructs. Though I haven't seen them used with great frequency, they look like fun, if you prep some in advance.

How do people feel about vivilors, from the d20 modern ruleset, Urban Arcana title? They're bare bones outsiders with a set of menus to choose extraordinary abilities from.

I'd have to extend the vivilor up past "level 5" and come up with a menu C, but they're largely patterened after astral constructs, anyway. Most of the work has been done for me.

Comments? What do you use for summoning templates, if anything?
