Sumo Wrestler

hmmm...that could be useful. I also wish I had complete warrior with me now. :]

OK, so what about equipment and magic items? There are the obvious choices (anything that grant a bonus to strength, for example), but what else would be good?

besides a bull rush or a overrun, what would a sumo wrestler do? Isn't sumo simply trying to push your opponent out of a ring? I could see a sumo wrestler being fun to play, but I would hate to pay the upkeep!

Have you never played Street Fighter as Eddie Honda?

Remember that originally, Sumo was a brutal martial art that contained elements of boxing and wrestling and that Jujitsu is an offshoot of Sumo. So all the strikes, throws, kicks, locks and chokes of Jujitsu are legitimate for a Sumo wrestler. It was when it entered the imperial court that it become ritualised to resemble the Sumo wrestling we know today.

Anyway nothing else to add except to remeber that dexterity needs to be high (as well as Str and Con) and that kicks, slaps and throws are as important as bullrush.

To win the match, a sumotori must either push or lift his opponent outside the ring or bring the opponent to his knees.

There are also rituals involved, like the stamping of the feet (to call upon the gods to watch), the clapping of the hand (to show he is weaponless), and throwing salt into the ringt to purify (rid of evil spirits that may affect his match).

Neat! In game terms, I think that's cool flavor, whether it translates ruleswise as certain kinds of skills (Knowledge(Religion)? Diplomacy?) or maybe another feat or maybe a ritual he could perform before a match or combat (Arcana Unearthed has some neat rules for small rituals). What do you think?

the monk route is good, just make him high STR and high CON

maybe come up with a feat that has imp grapple as prerequisite and simulates the dwarven stable build ability.
There is a feat in a recent issue of Dragon called "Stocky" that does exactly that (+4 to resist bull rush, etc.).

I don't suppose you'd happen to know which one, would you? ;) I do have Dragon magazine issues from the last three years or so, so I might just have to go through them tonight.

Heh! You got lucky; I have it clipped for my buddy's Grappling Monk to take in a couple of levels. Here it is:
Stocky:
+4 bonus to ability checks to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground. (Dragon 324 p. 78)

PS - Now that I think about it, if you want the full stats for my friend's Grappling Monk I am sure he would not mind. Let me know, and I will post them.

Hey, thanks for that, Rowport! :)

It would be neat to see the monk's stats, so please go ahead and post them. I'm going to try fighter and see how that goes - I'll post a draft soon.

He also gains the Track feat as a bonus feat. He has Knowledge (Nature), Handle Animal, and Survival as class skills. He gains a +2 racial bonus to Survival checks (already figured into the statistics given above). However, Altanians do not receive the normal human bonus of 4 skill points at first level, nor do they gain the 1 additional skill point at each additional level. Altanians do not feel the effects of age as other humans do.

There's also the UA monk varient where you give up the speed bonuses a monk normally accrues in exchange for a barbarian's DR.
