Super Mario - Brainstorming

Blackrat

He Who Lurks Beyond The Veil
I just got an interesting idea about a game set in the Super Mario universe  . Now obviously this would be somewhat single-player dungeon-crawl with the PC being our beloved plumber in red overalls  . If anyone want's to put in their two cents by giving a list of different NPC's and monsters in the games or maybe suggesting what game-system this would work in best, feel free to help in brainstorming. I'm considering using D20 Modern but D&D could work well too. I'll start making monster-conversions ASAP and we'll see what I can pull together. Ideas and suggestions are now welcome.

Some Friends:
Luigi - Mario's brother
Princess Toadstool
Toad - The little mushroom guy

Some Monsters:
Koopa Troopa - the evil reptilian-like turtles
Boo - a shy ghost
Goomba - the little evil mushroom guys

BBEG's:
King Koopa

Personally, I wouldn't use D&D for this at all. There's too much of an inherent reliance on magic items and it just wouldn't an out.

Maybe for a game that's so off-the-wall like this, you could try something like True20? I own the book, but it's a been awhile since I cracked it open, but basically, whatever sort of game you want, and whatever mix you want, is feasible under the rules in that book.

It would also help your players, wince what you are playing is not D&D, therefore you're using a system which is still d20, but not D&D as well.

Just some thoughts :)

cheers,

Thanks Nyaricus. That is exactly why I originally considered D20 Modern. I think I have True20 lying around somewhere in my lib. Gotta check it out.

Big Thanks Fru. That's quite helpfull.

Well here's my first monster. It uses base D&D monster style but could be easily adapted to other D20 styles. Can't decide on it's CR. 1/8 or 1/4.

Goomba
Size/Type: Small Plant
HD: 1/4 d8 (1hp)
Init: 2
Speed: 20ft
AC: 13 (+1 size, +2 Dex)
Base attack: 0
Attack: Bite; +3 (1d4-2)
Space/Reach: 5ft/5ft
Special Attacks:
Special Qualities: Low-light vision, Immunity to all mind-affecting effects, Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning, Not subject to critical hits.
Saves: Fort 1, Ref 2, Will -1
Abilities: Str 6, Dex 15, Con 10, Int 1, Wis 8, Cha 2
Skills: Don't bother. They're not smart enough to actually do anything but move and attack.
Feats: Weapon Finesse(B)
Environment: Plains or Sewers.
Organization: Few-Many
CR:
4865art_goomba01.jpg

These little walking mushrooms are actually more a nuisance than a real threat to an experienced plumber but if not careful they might swarm you in large numbers. The most usual way of disposing a goomba is to kick it hard in the face.

Goombas usually hang around outside sewer entrances and try to make lunch out of unwary plumbers. These little buggers don't seem to understand that even a couple of rats could outgun them and so they attack everything within their sight.

Yo!! Talath!! I summon thee!

Talath ran a short lived "Mushroom Kingdom" campaign about... 4 yrs ago?

My only regret is not having acid to drop before hand... :p

Cool. Was it a tabletop campaign or on EN-World? If it was here could someone find me a link to it? I want to see how he did it.

It was tabletop. He statted out most (if not all) of the Mario-Monsters and made some houserules to reflect the mechanics of the video-game... All in all it was strange and surreal. My Dwarf lost so many "lives" due to his low jump score (Fullplate didn't help) :p

Well, not really... have you played Super Mario RPG on SNES? It's actually preety good, and feature mario and his friends on a Final Fantasy-like party. It was fun: Mario had decent stats (equiped gloves and hammers, jumps on enemies and shoots fireballs), Bowser was the tank/heavy hitter (high hp and defenses, hurls spiked chains), Princess Peach/Toadstool was the party cleric (I loved casting 'Group Hug' - heals every party member; it just screams Peach ;) ), and so on...

(or get an SNES emulator ASAP! ;) )

Gah.

Now I'm having flashbacks to the whole '200 jumps in a row' thing... I don't' remember what you got for that, but I remember the pain of the attempts.

I'm going to curl up in the corner and rock slowly for a while now.
