Good idea, and I agree strongly with your last sentence. I might do that once (or twice) during the course of a campaign unless circumstances called for it to be used more often. Otherwise, the PC playing the caster might feel you're targeting his or her character.

In fact, don't use it as a surprise either.
When the players are performing the requisite information gathering before beseiging a fortification (cause that's a good use of a skill challenge) have one of the possible successes inform them of the anti-magical defenses put into place.
