Superior Unarmed Strike

Could anyone tell me what the damage output of this feat is? I've heard it's less than a monks but makes playing an unarmed focused fighter viable.

The easy way to remember the damage is that it's that of a small Monk (through level 19, anyway; it's missing the class's capstone boost). With a Fanged Ring (Dragon Magic) and this feat you're basically duplicating the unarmed damage of a medium Monk.

To be fair , the PHB II does have a bunch of snazzy fire-based monk feats, as well as Versatile Unarmed Strike (chop or stab with your unarmed strikes instead of pummeling).
