Superman: Spacey plays Luthor

Kate Bosworth seems like a weird choice. I wonder if Spacey had a hand in that. A skinny blonde doesn't strike me as the right type for Lois Lane, and there's nothing in her body of work that really stands out to me. Cardellini or Danes would have been great IMO, but we'll see.

Spacey's gonna carry this one. Getting him and Singer goes a long way to making this movie credible. I haven't been too excited about anything else I've heard about this movie though.

(Note that Kate is in final negotiations)

The reason Singer chose Kate was due to her chemistry with the actor that is playing Clark/Superman. The way I see it, she has everything to turn out a better Lois than Margot Kidder or Terri Hatcher. She's cute, but not supermodel-like, she has an athletic body, but not a Baywatch-style look. And she can easily darken her hair to either the dark brown or black (Lois has looked both ways in comics).

Big words. I thought Margot Kidder created an interesting Lois, and Teri Hatcher was a fantastic Lois. I think one of the keys for Bosworth will be to not try and recreate either of the two previous Lois's, but create a unique take on the character we haven't seen before. We'll see if she can pull it off.

Margot Kidder was true to the Lois of that time (as was the Superman-turning-back-time, since in the 70s Supes could do anything). But Teri Hatcher (while pretty and all) was an airhead of a Lois, totally unlike the tough-as-nails, daughter-of-general, army-brat, Pulitzer-prize-winning Lois Lane that has been running around in comics since 1986.

Fun Trivia: When Superman comics were first released in Brazil, they feared brazilians wouldn't understand the original names of some characters, so "Clark Kent" became "Edu Kent" (Edu is short for Eduardo, or Edward) and "Lois Lane" became "Miriam Lane". While Clark got his name back after a couple of issues, Lois remained as Miriam for decades, until the John Byrne reboot. So for most of his comic life in Brazil, Superman lost some of his double-L thing.

And Dean Cain didn't portray a nerdy Clark Kent, but he was also fantastic. Superman isn't just a character anymore. He's a legend. Same with Lois Lane. And to keep that legend fresh, you sometimes need to reinvent it. Teri Hatcher's scatterbrained Lois was a fantastic addition to the legend, IMO. I do hope this new Lois' will be as well.
