Bear in mind that "tied in" doesn't mean "inextricably linked with." They could just be referring to the fact that they're going to make a passing reference to Zod or something.

After the two X-Men movies, Singer has earned the benefit of the doubt many times over, IMO. Sure, he could still mess it up, but I don't think it's likely. Until I actually see evidence otherwise--horrific casting choices, bad scripts, or what have you--I'll consider this unabashed good news.

Gotta agree that I want the new Supes to have nothing to do with the old movies. Gah. Time travel, insane computers... blah.

you don't read comics do you. If you look at the superman run even ignoring than many contradictions, even after crisis things like insane computers and time travel seem like great ideas in comparison. As long as lex luthor isn't the superman/batman insane lunatic waste of space with the shades of the superfriends past motif I'm ok. Oh yeah in 6 short comics wreck the greatest comic villan of all time. I mean geez look how silly my write in campaign looks now that luthor is taking refuge on apokalypse.

"Tie in with the old movies" could simiply mean doing a short clip origin segment from the first hour of the first film with the Krypton/Clark as a boy segments. Those pieces still hold up fine and it bypasses having to waste time on the next film for that.

Darn it, just when I thought that X3 would conclude the series nicely, and finish out the series with style, and now Singer's gone and deep-sixed it. I think it's wonderful that he's agree to do Superman...but I never even entertained the idea that someone else would be doing X3, and now he's most likely not going to do it. This shoots everything to hell, as far as I'm concerned. The third film may very well be a disappointing finish to a series I thought had gotten it right. I consider X2 to be on the top 3 of all Superhero movies, and I suspect X3's future is very gloomy, now.

As for tying into the older movies, I'm assuming that what they meant was that they'll abide by some of the movie continuity, probably drawing on some material from Superman I and II.

I'm still bummed, though. X3's assurance of awesomeness is now radically diminished, and I'd rather Singer had focused on finishing what he'd started. (sigh)

And note that in X-Men, Synger didn't do an origin story either, it just goes "we're the X-Men, we're mutants that fight evil mutants" and goes on from there. No flashbacks on how Professor X put together the X-Men and stuff.

'X-Men' Director to Take on Superman Franchise

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "X-Men" director Bryan Singer has signed on to shoot the next Superman movie, replacing "Charlie's Angels" veteran McG, who dropped out a week ago over such issues as budget and location.



By signing on, Singer puts his next two high-profile projects in a gray zone. He was scheduled to direct "Logan's Run," and then return for a third shot at the comic-book franchise that propelled his career into the realm of big-budget tentpoles: Fox has already scheduled "X-Men 3" for a May 5, 2006 release.


There is no scheduled start date for Superman which, like "Logan's Run," is in development at Warner Bros. Superman's script is probably the most time-consuming element that will determine any production start. The previous script was written by "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams. Singer has a reputation for being very involved in the writing of his movies, as well as working with his own stable of writers.


Singer has long nursed a dream to direct a Superman movie.


"My interest in Superman dates back many, many years," he said. "In fact, it was the Richard Donner classic film that was my day-to-day inspiration in shaping the 'X-Men' universe for the screen. I feel that Superman has been late in his return and it is time for him to fly again."


Singer's other credits include "Apt Pupil" and "The Usual Suspects."


Besides McG, directors Tim Burton and Brett Ratner have also been involved with the resurrection of Warners' once-profitable franchise. The primary reason given for the exit of McG, ne Joseph McGinty Nichol, was the inability to agree on a budget, which reportedly hovers around $200 million, similar to what "Spider-Man 2" cost. Casting also was an issue, as was the shooting location. McG favored a New York shoot, while the studio favored Australia.

Actually, I used to read comics all the time. That's part of the reason I'm so critical of comic movies.

Yes, Supes had some rather rediculous comic escapades. So did most all comic superheroes. That doesn't make them any less rediculous, and I'd hope someone could stick to the good stories instead of the silly ones.
