sw d20 to saga conversion question

First Post
I'm looking at the conversion guide, and what's confusing me is converting skills... as saga compressed the amount of skills, how is this done balanced? It seems that a character being converted will have a ton of lvls that far surpasses how many trained they should have, and in some instances talents they shouldn't have... any help here?

Simplest thing is just to wing it. Look at what the original character is good at, and choose equivalent skills in Saga. For anything they're really good at, take the Skill Focus feat.

I agree, you can't do a 1 for 1 precise conversion, so you have a look and see what is the most sensible way of carrying themes important for the PC across.

Do you have anything particularly in mind?

Conversion

Pretty much the Saga Edition is D&D 4.0 for StarWars. You can try to convert past characters or current ones but they will never match up. 3.5 editions were about making you micromanage your character (levels, skills, etc) and environment. 4.0 is about streamlining Skills, Powers, Defense making the game run smoother. You can try to match them up but what you will find is that a 4.0 Character will be able to trounce any 3.5 character of the same level. I am still waiting for a "Pathfinder 3.75" edition for Starwars. I hope I have been of some help to you.

Take a "Saga skill" and find which "RCR skills" contribute to it. For example, Perception in Saga uses the Spot, Search, and Sense Motive applications from RCR. So then:

"Saga skill" = Perception
"RCR skills" = Spot + Search + Sense Motive

Add up the RCR ranks that the character put into those particular skills. If the ranks add up to 5 or more, then make that character trained in that Saga skill (which adds +5 in Saga). If the ranks add up to 10 or more, then make that character focused in that Saga skill (which adds +10 in Saga).

Note: In Saga, you can train a number of skills at level 1 equal to your class + INT modifier. But to be focused in a skill, you need to take the Skill Focus feat.

Here's a couple more examples:

"Saga skill" = Deception
"RCR skills" = Bluff + Disguise + Forgery

"Saga skill" = Stealth
"RCR skills" = Hide + Move Silently + Sleight of Hand

As for Initiative, I would train it in Saga if the character is combat based or has a high DEX.

One thing worth mentioning is Force skills. If I recall correctly, in d20 Revised Edition, Force use is divided into a number of individual skills.

If your d20 character has invested in Force skills, then make his Saga version trained in Use the Force (he'll need to gain the Force Sensitivity feat, which is a Jedi starting feat), and probably give him Skill Focus in it as well. Then have him take one or more instances of the Force Training feat, selecting Force Powers which reflect the Force skills in which his d20 version had invested.
